James O'Brien this morning on LBC was talking about Starmer's policy changes & reshuffle and asked who it was Starmer was trying to appease or appeal to - Reform Voters or those rebels in the Labour Party.

It actually struck me that without realising it, O'Brien had hit the nail on the head. Starmer is not leading with a vision, he is spending his time trying to appease too many people.
A good and strong eader sets out their vision and leads the way forward, not spends all their time trying to appease others

I've been saying this all along. He's governing like a leader with a slender majority approaching a General Election rather than one with a huge majority and early enough in the term to make unpopular decisions with a chance for them to pay off.

I was interested in why the term motorcyclist is in headline. Its irrelevant to the story.

Exactly. The headline should have read "person arrested and detained for a specified period as part of a government crackdown on undocumented migrants working for food delivery apps".

Much more snappy and nothing irrelevant. We just need the minimum of facts.

Alternatively and simple- just replace word motorcyclist with word "male".

There is no need to single out motorcyclists as its nothing to do with fact he had a motorbike

It is a bizarre story, but, he does not look obviously "foreign" (ie black), plus, if he had motorcycle helmet on, there was was even less of him visible. Without reading the whole article, presumably, he failed to do whatever he was meant to do to retain "right to remain" at Brexit?

Yeah. I assume they knew who he was. It looks likely he hadn't jumped through any Brexit hoops since, having been here since he was a kid, having an NI number, having gained qualifications, worked & paid tax etc, it never occurred to him that he had to. There are probably a fair few like him getting caught in Starmer's fashing net.

So on reflection SpenSatan might be right about the bike being irrelevant.

Why is "male" relevant? Aren't some women undocumented migrants, and don't some even ride motor cycles?

You should get a job as a journalist, you'd definitely increase sales by millions with your factual, relevant headlines.

I think it's just how they choose to present the story. Guy goes to shops on motorbike for a can of baked beans and ends up banged up in Immigration Detention.

If he'd gone by car or on a push bike that might have been mentioned.

Don't see how mentioning the bike is singling out but I guess that depends on how you look at it/where you start.

To be fair the Tories were pretty keen (qv Windrush) on isolating people who hadn't the right documentation.

Having read the whole article he appears to have come to the UK as a minor and worked since attaining his majority.

On the face of it he would be eligible for Settled Status under the post Brexit arrangements but didn't realise he needed to apply.

He's not alone.

Anybody, like myself, providing benefit advice comes across people who fell through the EU Settlement Scheme's slats in one way or another on a fairly regular basis.

It's maybe the unbelievable aspect to the story. OK, sounds like he should have applied for "settled status" or whatever but given he has an NI number, HMRC number (he's been paying tax), etc. how come he "was taken to a detention centre near Gatwick airport where he was held for 29 days."

But also highlights the failings of the Home Office in "The Home Office opposed bail for Fontoura, arguing there was no evidence to support his claim that he entered the UK in 2004 with his family." yet he has an NI number, HMRC tax payer (for over 10 years), etc. Seems there are loads of documents available but Home Office ... I guess they just don't bother to look and declare "no evidence" - sort of helps one understand how so much of their work becomes such a complete mess (and disasters like Windrush happen). And then to be detaining people, what a complete farce our Government is.

This got a mention in the Gender thread (which I stopped reading long ago apart from checking in periodically). Some of the most prolific posters in NCAAP seem more concerned by Donald Trump's attacks on the US constitution and either haven't noticed this or don't care which tells you a lot about their mindset and priorities.

It's because they're ok with it when it's people they don't like. There's a whole side discussion on the Gender thread about how withholding services isn't a breach of the Equality Act when you don't like the person you're discriminating against.
