Might explain why they don’t get elected. They need to promise unicorns then when elected and people ask where the unicorns are point out that unicorns don’t exist and they assumed everyone knows that.

Whether or not thy promised too much would probably need them to be in power so I guess we'll never know. But even if they didn't promise too much, that doesn't mean that their policies aren't a bit shoot.
