So 'Starmer's vision quest' is to be hated slightly less than Reform. That's quite some aspiration. Got it.

Delivery of Ajax tanks for British army. 8 years behind schedule.

Starmer going to send them to the eastern front, where warfare is dominated by drones which destroy tanks for breakfast

Rachel going to bring in tax per mile for EV drivers.

Idea being owners estimate the miles they do each year and pay a fee based on that number.

DVLA will be given the job of policing the policy.

I do minus 10k miles a year

Mileage is recorded at every MOT. Smart move would be to exempt new EVs from the charge as this would reduce impact in EV uptake, and just make it part of the MOT process.

A new way to tax driving has to happen at some point. It is not one of her worst ideas.

Impose, hit, hammer? Poor old drivers.

What he hasn't worked out is they already have monitoring chips in his car. Not to mention the one in his head - remember that COVID vaccination @CXRAndy?

I was being sarcastic ;)

It's an interesting number shenhas come up with. 10k miles a year is £300, and ballpark charging costs somewhere around £700 if you need to use public chargers some of the time (which for that mileage you probably would).

Gemini tells me charging costs could be nearer £200 if you do it solely off peak at home, or as hight as £1200 for solely commercial fast charging.

VED on a lot of cars is let's say £175, and fuel duty to drive that far roughly £1400.

There's are gross approximations obviously, but however you look at it 3p a mile does very substantially eat into the benefit for running an EV.

A disaster for Rachel, she cant control the pensioners. Folk are waiting out Labour till next election. Withdrawing money now, battening down.

Britain’s Boomers are quietly running a Reeves tax rebellion
Pensioners are taking their money ‘off grid’ to beat the desperate Chancellor’s clutches

All the speculation about pensions is hugely unhelpful. It is the wrong financial instrument to fūck with on 5 year election cycles.

Labour have created a huge hole, so much so they dont know how to fill it. Rumours are rife from all sides.

Personally our accountants and IFA are on speed dial to manoeuvre as soon as anything concrete is announced

About time they reinstated the fuel price escalator then.

There is an excellent conspiracy theory that oil companies actively want the gulf stream to collapse, because it would turn countries like the UK into arctic wastelands like Canada, requiring far more heating through the winter. Mind you, it's a good conspiracy theory, as it's actually vaguely believable.

Excellent conspiracy theory is an oxymoron.

I only think the fuel duty escalator is reasonable if there is an alternative. we are getting there, but consumers are still being pricey gouged out of EVs.

Somewhat like the disc brakes debate, for the most part only very large heavy ones are being made, which needs big and expensive batteries. They really should be 2/3 the size (i.e. not SUVs), 3/4 the weight and 80% of the cost. It is.

Or a conspiracy theory to figure out why that's not the case.
