Last year the British taxpayer spent £9 billion on Universal Credit for foreign nationals.

Remember that next time a politician tells you “tough decisions need to be made”.

The trouble is that the Right don't want it 'solved', as it's their excuse to demonise migrants. They broke the system for that end.
I agree. Gives them an "excuse" for pretty well anything not as electorate want; not a valid excuse but eg flood defences fail and blame the asylum seekers and even if the reason doesn't hold it will have distracted from the raised issue and now we're talking about immigration and ignoring flood defences.

Does that figure include foreign nationals who have lived here (possibly for may years), worked, paid their taxes etc etc,

It will do. Despite what some sources would have you believe, to qualify for Universal Credit you need to meet residency criteria, you can't just land your small boat, rock up at a Job Centre and be getting money instantly.

Anyone with even a vague knowledge of the system would be aware of this.

To some people there is no difference.

I agree, that is why I asked the question, plus, to me, it does make a difference

Yes, I was aware of that, but, residency is one. aspect, putting in (as well as taking out) is another IMHO.

And that's part of the problem with how Universal Credit is perceived. It's nothing to do with how much you've put in, if it was many of the 8 million UK born claimants wouldn't qualify for anything having never worked in their lives.

This can turn into a long exchange.

1. I am aware that UC is not based on "contributions".
2. I wasn't thinking in terms of only getting out what you put in, but, on here, the "immigrants contribute too" is frequently mentioned (and I agree).
3. I am aware of the bolded bit, my No2 son is one of them (well, he has worked for 6 months, of his 51 years)

It'll only get lengthy if CXRAndy gets involved with some ill informed pish about the system.

Why should foreign nationals get longterm benefits. They should go home if unable to support themselves. They are here to work.
