I have to admit I've changed my mind on ID cards (as long as it's not compulsory to carry them at all times), but here's yet another example of terrible Labour politics: why not just call it the UK ID Card? Oh yes, they have to pander to the Reform loons.

ID cards are a disaster that will address nothing. The entire UK population having to have ID card just to stop a small number of asylum seekers working illegally (noting that in the EU such people working is legal). This small group are paid cash by employers who know why they are paying in cash and why they don't ask for an NI number.
When I lived in France carrying an ID card was supposedly a legal requirement (eg passport if foreign). I refused to carry my ID. After a tragic "incident" where I got my response right I got to know the local Gendarmes quite well (I lived remote and they'd often come round 16:00'ish (last couple of hours of their shift) and we'd sit outside drinking. Apparently law is (or was early 2000s) you must be able to prove who you are and if you can't worst they can do is hold you for max 4 hrs if they believe they have grounds
In France ID cards doesn't stop illegal working (eg 300,000 "sans-papiers" in France); we already have NI numbers in UK (so no additional cost). Last time Labour tried this is cost us (taxpayers) £4bn (completely wasted our money).
So last ID card effort cost £4bn yet Labour refusing to address horrendous levels of child property when removing the 2-child benefit cap would cost around the same (Local Government Association estimate scrapping 2-child benefit limit would cost only £1.3bn); supposedly we can't afford to address child poverty but we can afford 4x the amount for an ineffective PR stunt that won't address anything.
