Totally disagree with your first sentence, but its comparative simplicity is what makes it attractive and easy to play. I agree with the rest of your post though.

What better team game is there? There are lots of them, but the thing about football is it doesn't need much equipment either.

Obviously there are a multitude of other team sports, but I think you will struggle to find one that lacks a glaring down side compared to football.

I agree "finest' is subjective and some people might even say that bowls or polo or, unbelievably, American Football are the finest games
Bowls is dull. It is just outdoor marbles.

American football requires a team of about 50 people to play properly and the games last too long. It is also in that group of sports that results in brain damage. It also needs a lot of equipment to offset that risk. Scratch games in the park are so distantly removed from the actual sport as to make no useful comparison.

Quite, a ball, plus a couple of jumpers for goal posts, and, game on 😂

Fair point!

I've fallen out of love with the game at elite level, but as a cheap fun "everyperson" sport you can play anywhere [including any part of your school] ... hard to beat.

Meh, it’s simple alright.
Quantity doesn’t equate to quality, though.

I've been to one football match, where my son, aged 11, was playing. I've been to one rugby match (Exeter at the old ground before Mr Rowe spent his ill-gotten gains on them) dragged there by E who didn't know the rules but liked 'watching the men's bums'.
Actually, I have played both games, and cricket, at school, but very, very badly.
