It's a small number in relation to the number of annual asylum claims in total, but it's a large number as a % of those given student visas. Is there a % at which it should be considered that students are deliberately using the visa scheme to claim asylum or do we just write it off because the relative numbers are small?
The point we were discussing was whether this was performative on behalf of the govt, which the low numbers would suggest it is.
Ignoring any possible performative aspect and just considering the % as you suggest, I don't believe you can call it a "large number" as you say it is. Students on Visas make up about 13% of all asylum claimants. In addition, the percentage of all students on Visas that claim asylum is about 3.5%. The number also fell by 10% from 2024-2025. It is subjective, but I don't see either of those as a large number.
As for whether that number, represents 'abuse' of the system, you would need to know how many student asylum applications were successful, which is not available. For the govt. to suggest it constitutes abuse without confirming whether or not these applications are successful makes their claim performative IMO.
