Starmer's vision quest

But the Labour rulebook appears to make its own additional stipulations. “In opposition,” Johnson explains, “if a Labour leader resigns, the deputy automatically becomes acting leader. But in government, the rules say the cabinet – in consultation with the NEC – selects an acting leader from among their own ranks.”

That last bit could prove important. It appears to open up the possibility of a scenario in which Streeting resigns from cabinet, Starmer immediately steps down as leader, and Streeting is at that point ineligible to become prime minister – because he is no longer at the top table. Again, there is little clarity.
I think that there is a lot of misreading going on. This is about appointing an acting leader whilst a leadership contest is being run. Streeting couldn't be acting leader but if he has the support of 81 MPs he can put his name forward to be the next PM.

Streeting seems to have run out of steam very quickly.
He doesn’t appear to have the numbers to launch a leadership campaign.

The confidence is an interesting one, I wonder how much that is due to the media and some politicians telling people how bad things are all the time and how much it is just the genuine feel people are getting in their lives?

If he can only get around 10% of the parliamentary party, how on earth does he think things will get better with the more left leaning wider membership?

The fact he has resigned and not tried to trigger a contest would appear to back this up.

As mentioned, I think there are just too many people who hate him for it to work, so he's rather shot himself in the foot, I'd suggest. If Starmer has got a political bone in his body (I still doubt it), he'd be looking at the O part of a SWOT analysis that's been opened up by a Blue Labour figurehead leaving of his own free will.

I did find it odd when announced. He would know he does not have the support so I am unsure why he has resigned? Unless he thinks some other opportunity will present itself further down the line. Timing of it all is rather strange.

Hmmm, as we have all said before, Starmer recognising the O part of it is slim bordering on none existent I fear!

I'm expecting wonderful things from the government once one of the potential challengers replaces Starmer. With one of these candidates in place the party will be revolutionised and forget their left/right splits, and over the next three years the lot of people in this country will be improved so much that Reform will just slink away with their tails between their legs with Farage counting his millions in his Clacton love-nest, Badenoch will be lost with no topics on which she can show her wit and wisdom at Question Time, the Greens will go back to just hugging trees, Wales and Scotland will reject those divisive Nat parties, and the Red Wall areas really will return to deepest red.

🎼 Things can only get better 🎼
