I'm thinking more of Brown who led at the time and ducked a snap election, a decision he never recovered from

Burnham will never see a polling starting with a 3 again

There's an argument that if he gets in he should call a snap election

Those numbers won"t last what's coming
Maybe it depends. Even given a General Election we don't get to vote for a Prime Minister, closest is a very small %age get to vote for or not the person most likely to.

So best national thing we can vote on is the manifesto.

So if Burnham sticks to the current manifesto then maybe harder to argue about a General Election? ie he's taking over because current incumbents are failing to implement what they promised and he intends to implement the same promises but successfully.

That said there is a fair amount of legislation not covered by manifestos so radical changes might means people would want a different local representative (MP).

Hence it depends.

eg I see Ms Reeves is now intending to remove more rights we have for recourse to courts 'cos people taking issues to court are stopping them railroading stuff the public don't want through anyway.

It's probably a reasonable strategy but I think Labour will wait it out and hope the world order settles down.

Pity though because it they call a snap election Reform would have no option but to accidentally put forward some neonazi candidates with extensive Instagram and X histories, and apologise to the electorate later over a pint.

I don't know, I think at the moment the threat of Reform is too strong. If Burnham becomes PM and makes the predicted policy changes, he has a good while to change voting intentions. If he does and the nation's prospects start to improve and Reform still win, at least it will then be clear that nothing could have been done to prevent it.

I think it will be difficult to generalise the result from Burnham's by election. A lot of factors that won't apply to most other constituencies eg Burnham is local, has a good track record and reputation in the area, is looking to replace a staggeringly unpopular PM, etc.

Of course many commentators and Labor Party MPs, staff, supporters will generalise the result and I suspect were they to act on their generalisation would discover its shortcomings.

Only a secretsqirrel would drop the U to cover their tracks, all part of the covert operation.
