I suspect fame will have come second to royalties, if Gregory's agent knew what he was doing. Though he also plays jazz, so he would need a regular income to cover that habit.

Herbie Flowers was hung over and short of cash so he suggested playing an uprightbass overdubbed with an electric bass on Walk on the Wild Side. That way he got a double session fee. £24 in total.

Thanks to Trumpet for bringing this up I found out….
“George had insisted that it was played on a tenor sax – an alto would have been easier – but my saxophone is an old Selmer from 1964 and it didn’t have that top note – it was what we call a ‘fake finger’ – so I suggested that if he took the track down by a semitone I’d have all the proper notes on my horn. So he did his calculations, he slowed the tape down and I had a go. We went into the control room and he put it back to the proper speed. And as he was playing it back George walked into the studio. He listened and he said ‘We got there!’ and he pointed at me and said ‘You were number nine!’.”

Ha, I was once booked to do a concert (on trumpet) for the stupidly low fee of £50, but there was one short number that needed two treble recorders when the trumpets weren't playing, so I rashly suggested that us two trumpeters might play the parts. When the organiser said "Yes please!", we went out and learnt the parts, and got an extra £25 for our efforts, for about 2 minutes of playing.
There's quite a history of band arrangers putting in a just few bars of 'doubling' in specific parts to get the prescribed union 'doubling fee' for musicians.

Sad news from the creative world as Marjane Satrapi has passed away, an incredible French/Iranian author, illustrator, director and activist, best known for Persepolis, which blew me away when I first read/saw it.
Her husband passed away last year: friends and family have said she died of a broken heart which is the most romantic thing I've heard in a while.
Only 56.

Currently going over my parts for singing in this little concert on Sunday evening. Looking forward to it but at the same time will be glad when it's over as it has been all consuming for the last 18 months. I think I finally know my words and notes for everything but just trying to brush up on the details. It's going to be quite tough for some of the foreign choirs with at least seven songs in Welsh (there's also some Latin for good measure). They also haven't had the benefit of the two joint rehearsals the more local choirs had.
