I particularly like the way Infantino is openly bribing some of the poorer nations to support the proposal. The problem is, if there are no European nations present it sort of destroys the competition anyway. That's not some attempt at European exceptionalism, just an acknowledgement that aside from teams from Europe and South America there have only been 3 teams I believe that have reached a semi-final (with one of those being nearly 100 years ago).

I suspect Infantino caught the Trump disease of thinking he held all the cards.

I can see why many of the poorer soccer nations would be tempted by the offer of a quick buck, but not sure that the richer associations such as USA, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Australia and the northern parts of Africa would want to be part of a WC that doesn't involve the European teams.

Yep, UEFA is arguably equally as powerful as FIFA. I said over on the CC football thread I thought they would do this. Makes total sense, FIFA without European involvement is pretty much neutered.

It mirrors Trump telling Zelenskyy that the US might not supply arms to Ukraine, so Ukraine is developing its own arms industry that will undercut the US in international sales. Though I guess the football thing is less deadly.

The point is that that FIFA only make money via tv rights and advertising.
Without any European teams the value of the competition would be a fraction of its current value.

The irony is that the money FIFA has promised is from it's existing cash reserves.

For context, FIFA earned 15 Bn dollars from this world cup. The offering to the associations to approve their plan will cost 6 Bn.

All the PE sale plan does is ensure that a large proportion of that money bleeds out to bankers in future years.

But Infantio and the rest of the executive can benefit from selling the golden eggs within the newly dead goose.
