what is the preferred alternative

I certainly would not want an elected President

just another layer of political trouble for no real gain
and they would want some sort of power of something - even only something small
but then who would want it except the wrong sort of people

Nah - keep it as it is - it may be a bit daft and everything - but it sort of works and the problems as less than with the alternatives
