I rather like this analogy, given that seems to be the intention of a large chunk of the AI industry. I'd probably be not so sceptical if they were ambitious but at least outwardly benign (and preferably genuinely benign).

Not an AI fail in itself, but rather of the business model, which appears to have been based on getting people hooked while setting up a ridiculously hungry hardware system, then setting up a price structure to cover the extremely high costs. What's going to give?

Customer's money to the suppliers obs. Their business plan will be relatively similar to drug dealers.

I wonder if they've asked AI how to fix it...

They probably did, got told complete hallucinatory drivel and that's what caused the failure.

Sort of backlash against the impacts continues/develops
In first, California city overwhelmingly votes to permanently ban datacenters
Residents in Monterey Park, California, became the first in the US to vote on a permanent ban on datacenters on Tuesday, and early results indicate a resounding victory for the prohibition.

While many cities and counties have already passed temporary or indefinite moratoriums via their local governments, Monterey Park would be the first to do so through a ballot initiative.

The ballot measure needs a majority vote – at least 51% – to win. As of 2am Pacific Time, 86.3% of the more than 7,000 votes counted so far were in favor of banning datacenters.
Increasing public opinion against highlighted in a Gasllup poll

Just linking this AI slop ...
Daft thing about all this AI slop and hallucinations and mis-information is that across the board (not just posts here by any poster) it's making appreciating and understanding so much more work as news events now need to be treble+ checked just to see if they are another AI madness.

AI is having a major detrimental impact on the world just in terms of climate damage (eg energy use), environmental impacts (eg water use), economy (eg computer chip price increases, job losses), etc. and yet as a tool it's worse than useless, not saving time but making things slower and less reliable.

Only thing it seems good at is making the tech billionaires even more money yet they seek to get others to risk their capital.

Edit: If I had a tool in my workshop that made doing things harder I'd quickly stop using it.

Just linking this AI slop failure of mine from the Good News thread, as a mea culpa. At least I'm not an Oxford Professor in Energy and Climate Policy.

https://ncap.cyclechat.net/threads/the-good-news-only-thread.155/post-181395

The professor's original post has now been deleted by him. Hopefully he republishes with an apology for the imagery, as I'd hope that the text itself doesn't suffer from the same slop, and the good news is worth sharing, if borne out in genuine statisitcs.

And yes, he's now published a very embarrassed apology.
