International Men's Day? Is that a thing?
Dunno, I didn’t get one….

As a young person growing y role models up tended to be real people; family members, teachers, upstanding members of the community, you know, REAL people.
But I knew who weren't my role models, and that certainly would have included dick heads like Nick Fletcher.

It's quite useful to have a few very obvious

"Don't be that guy"

Examples, for kids to see.

Awww...

Altogether now..

"Everyday is International Men's Day"

There are some interesting discussion points contained in that, but denying that he linked male violence to Doctor Who is just silly. We all saw the video clip and heard his words. He did.

It would be quite interesting to find out if people here did, or still do, have fictional role models, that influenced their behaviour , growing up*.

*Cue, aside about not everyone having done the 'growing up' part

So it's hard not to laugh at someone joining "The Common Sense Group" [they wouldn't have me  ]:

but you folks are pulling some acrobatics to twist these words; I assume the Guardian can be trusted, so here's what he said about role models etc:
And it is not just James Bond: in recent years we have seen Doctor Who, the Ghostbusters, Luke Skywalker and The Equalizer all replaced by women, and men are left with the Krays and Tommy Shelby [a character in the BBC drama Peaky Blinders].”
https://www.theguardian.com/politic...-casting-women-risks-driving-boys-to-crime-mp

He continued: “Is it any wonder that so many young men are committing crimes? Such programmes make crime look cool.”

Let's look at the bold text. " ... make crime look cool"; now, is he putting that with the previous clause - the one about the Krays and Peaky Blinders - or is he linking that back to Ghostbusters and Luke Skywalker??

It gets more hilarious when he issues a clarification; apparently the clarification is wrong, according to well-reputed telepaths on Cyclechat/NACA.
Amazing

Do teenagers really aspire to being either (or both) of the Krays? Would more male Ghostbusters put them back on the straight and narrow?

So instead of making out it's all the wimmins fault for having the audacity to play strong female leads.

He could just point to the corrosive nature of glamourising crime and wrongdoing perpetrated in the dramas that are, and have been made.

It's not as if poor male role models haven't been glamourised since the beginning anyhow.

Look at any number of crime dramas 'thrilers' 'maverick cop' movies , war or pretty much the whole of the 'western' canon.

And the violent porn scene on top of that .

Men behaving badly is routinely portrayed, as 'normal' desirable even, in all those places.

Bringing the fact that there has been a female Dr Who into the debate smacks of the same old same old

"Our deficiencies must somehow be the fault of women" schtick.

You can't refer to REAL people on here mate or else you'll be accused of living in a small World, if you can't provide a link or some proof it didn't happen!

I think that's already clear from his comments about the Krays et al?

I think you need some weird microscope to keep focusing on the Dr Who thing! Still, it's playing well on this thread, so keep going👍

I expect he knows, and you know, that the actresses don't make the decisions, so it's probably moot. But I think he was focusing on existing male roles getting swapped out. (Has he bitched about Wonder Woman? Or Suranne Jones? ] It's swings and roundabouts whether these cast changes are a "good thing", but if those roles WERE good role models, then you can't disagree with the statement that male role models were reduced in number by those swaps. It's just illogical, captain!

I'd recommend hearing Caitlin Moran's view on the women in male roles - she has a different twist on this. She certainly doesn't think a female Bond is essential, nor Marvel women in lycra. I won't try to mansplain the details, get it from the horse's mouth ...
