They're damned if they do and damned if you don't.
Imagine social workers removing kids left, right and centre and people on here would be up in arms!

Social Workers used to do that, with court orders.

I do remember a few years ago that there was quite the kick up in Scotland about it. Not sure if the same happened in England, different legal system.

I agree and disagree with that. I was brought up in care and there were some bloody awful social workers (as I mentioned, including one that attacked me while off his face on drugs) but there was one guy who was awesome and I still regard hm as my 'Dad' as he was the only one that acted liked he cared. Along with the other 6 boys he was in charge of.

I would imagine the type of person who thinks the sentences were too harsh or that it wasn't really their fault at all!

I'm def not one of them.

IIRC, 28 years was their sentence and not even close to acceptable.

The leader of the local authority, to whom the quote was attributed, is Coun Susan Hinchcliffe.

She has nothing directly to do with social services, but spends her time going from one pointless meeting to the next, having hoovered up a dozen or more committee positions - again typically.

I would agree with that. I (fortunately) never experienced the "care system" from your angle, but, I was a Foster Parent. for a number of years. Some Social Workers were excellent, some, a complete waste of oxygen.

First up I thought only the harshest of harsh sentences would fit. But then in one of the photos one of the perpetrators has scrubbed up sexy like Emma Raducanu - nothing like the raddled skank who did the first one - so I'm thinking maybe some leniency should be shown her?

It's tricky distilling my man-feelings of rage and lust into sound penal decisions.
If only we had some sort of impartial judiciary for determining these things.

Aren't the judiciary "people"? If yes, they are hardly totally impartial.

Just about the same as in any type of job. The sad thing is someone doing a bad job in this type of work has a lot more potentially tragic implications than in most others.
I worked briefly with a couple of social work departments at one stage and even 20 years ago the staff had huge problems trying to manage their ever increasing caseload.
It is not a job I would ever have wanted to do and I doubt any of them went into that work looking for an easy life.

I worked briefly with a couple of social work departments at one stage and even 20 years ago the staff had huge problems trying to manage their ever increasing caseload.
It is not a job I would ever have wanted to do and I doubt any of them went into that work looking for an easy life.

My experiences are more like 40-45 years ago, sadly, it appears little has changed, despite all of the "lessons learned".
