Not really a valid question as the people smuggling route used to be on lorries. It was largely when port security was improved to shut that down that a switch to boats was made.

With lorries we have less idea about migrant vs refugee or even of numbers as many probably went undetected by authorities.

With the small boat crossings we are far more aware of numbers and reasons (migration vs asylum).

There must be an answer, it's just that people don't seem to be capable of giving it. All I am trying to establish is how effective the old arrangement was I reality - regardless of how good it might look on paper. That said, it's not too relevant as we won't be going back.
