There is a lot of negative reviews, some are valid, but from experience, nothing like the level posted. The common one is build quality, I can testify my older model S is not as well put together as our model 3. Compared to a German vehicle maybe a tad down on quality, but nothing worse than a Japanese brand.

Some folk justify this well posted quality as a reason to not buy a Tesla.

My friend has a BMW M50 EV, she, when asked about the car, always says it poor on range- around 200 miles, which for her is close to being awkward for the types of driving she does. That is compounded by the fact any other supercharger network is patchy, not well populated compared to Tesla's network.

Plus an extra 50-80 miles of range really does make a big difference for long journeys.
But she wont buy a Tesla because she likes German cars. A model S would have been a far better vehicle for her

Tesla are grabbing sales because their cars are years ahead in technology compared to others.

To give you some obvious benefits over their competition for given price bracket

  • Regular over the air updates- this includes free vehicle improvements/ features
  • Their FSD is better than the rest-currently
  • Greater range than most of the competition- for same price bracket
  • Superior performance- acceleration
  • No regular servicing required
  • minimalist design concept-popular
  • unrivalled Supercharger network
  • Tesla mobile phone app is excellent, works flawlessly.

You just ask drivers who have a Nissans, VW, BMW, Porsche etc who have driven a Tesla. Most will confirm if honest, that as a package, Tesla is a country mile ahead.

It really has very little that their range is slightly below what they advertise.

Go and hire one for a week, then you will realise how good they are.
And currently under investigation by the NHTSA, following the forced recall of over 300,000 vehicles, in the US, for mulitple serious mechanical defects. One of those defects, described by Musk as minor, is the steering link breaking without warning.

What about the so called 'recall' for a window problem- which was sorted by an OTA update. But the negative press went to town on Tesla has to recall nearly all their vehicles, it really wasn't the case.

There are many recalls across all manufacturers for remedial repairs, Tesla haters really like to highlight the defects

This is what an article said about it and other recalls

Tesla voluntarily recalled some of its Model S and Model X vehicles over power steering problems caused by a flawed software update, eventually fixing the issue with another software update.

Typically, an NHTSA probe will lead to an automaker investigating possible manufacturing or design defects and conducting a voluntary recall

Tesla will investigate and likely contact all those effected for repairs

Material defects can't be sorted by a software update. And to have to remove over 300,000 vehicles from the road, for the same defect, isn't really a laughing matter.

The NHTSA aren't "Tesla haters" as far as I'm aware.

Saw a really good advert for Tesla reliability yesterday, a petrol powered service van, bearing their logo. The driver doesn't trust the vehicles he's employed to service.

Vehicles are being recalled all the time. Yes it does require attention promptly, but don't think Tesla is any worse than all the others.

Its happening all the time

PLANO, Texas (July 12, 2023) – Toyota is conducting a non-compliance safety recall in the U.S. involving certain 2023 model year Toyota Corolla, Corolla Cross, Corolla Cross hybrid, Highlander, Highlander hybrid, Tacoma, as well as Lexus RX and RX hybrid and 2024 model year NX and NX hybrid vehicles. Approximately 110,000 vehicles in the U.S. are involved in this recall.

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2022-2023 iX xDrive40, iX xDrive50, iX M60, and 2022-2023 X1 xDrive28i vehicles. The front driver's air bag may have been manufactured incorrectly and may not deploy as intended during a crash.

What cars are on recall right now?

Recalls
  • Nissan Leaf Recalled over Faulty Control Software.
  • Ford Escape Investigated over Door Problem.
  • NHTSA Investigating 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6.
  • 125,000 Honda, Acura Vehicles under Brake Recall.

Your examples still leave tesla out in front, with over 300,000 vehicles to be removed from the roads though.

To have no link, physical or FBW, between the steering wheel and the steering mechanism is going to cost more in time than money. Hopefully this "minor fault" as described by Musk doesn't leave anyone dead.

Biggest recalls of 2022 were into the millions

1. Ford Motor Co.
No. of recalls: 67
Vehicles affected: 8,636,265
Most recalled component category: Powertrain

2. Volkswagen Group of America
No. of recalls: 46
Vehicles affected: 1,078,443
Most recalled component category: Backover prevention

Like I said , it's the hype of trying to knock Tesla when actually recalls are happening all the time for various issues.

If NHTSA were really concerned a major alert would have gone out over all media to stop driving the vehicles.

Except Tesla are doing it themselves.

The hype tended to be the other way round,

US made Teslas get a lot of stick for their very low quality control, just not in the media.
Criticism came about mainly because Tesla got a free ride in so many aspects.

Their QC is perfectly fine for the Model 3 and Y. Early model S and X were subpar.

We are talking pre 2017.

If they were such lemon's then their sales would not be rising so rapidly. Their reputation would be trashed

We have 80,000 miles on our 2019 Teslas and are going along nicely.

Yes we've had some minor niggles, No worse when we drove high end Audi's before Tesla were around.

Every brand is not perfect and to single one manufacturer out thinking others are far superior is pointless.

Legacy manufacturers are quaking in the boots at the meteoric rise of Tesla.
