I mentioned the roof (also the floor), but I also said that the metal was inferior, so the things were basically doomed before they had taken off anyway, regardless of what windows they were.
And that's how they invented metal fatigue.
It was the start of it being taken seriously - I believe that people who knew/suspected or had theories about it were ignored or shunned, because, of course, we just HAD to be first, Hurrahh!!

When I said 'Hatch' originally, I meant that bit generally.

It came flying off in the explosive decompression, everyone who was not strapped in, flew up in the upward force, gained head injuries (fractured Skulls, etc) from hitting the ceiling, also, their lungs burst, along with all who were strapped in because of the sudden decompression. Lower limb injuries were found on many too, as they landed on the floor again, but by that time, it was breaking up anyway.

The cracks extended via the easiest routes, i.e. the bodyside window corners (which had their problems anyway) and so on.

By the way, I only mentioned the injuries (which are known, because these were the first accidents like that), to illustrate better how the aircraft broke up, with the weakest point in the roof going first.

Naturally the passengers were further injured in the fall to earth, but they were able to establish the same basic pattern of injuries in many, i.e. head injury, ruptured lungs and lower limb damage.

I wonder how much any of them really knew of what had just happened.

Some years ago I stayed in a B&B run by a rather grand elderly woman. She told me she had been a stewardess on Comets. She was due to fly on the fatal flight, but was ill, so her best friend went instead.

Back to Blatten, and rather striking satellite imagery. I rather hope they aren't proposing to rebuild there, as this image suggests it might be unwise, all things considered, even if it's practical to clear the debris.
