I suspect the focus will be on relocating the residents of the other villages in that valley before they too disappear.

I imagine that there will be considerable contamination of the river for some time, and increase further down the valley for obvious reasons.

It's an interesting aspect to losing our glaciers. No idea about Switzerland but I visited a fair number of glaciers in Peru which have and continue massive retreat. They've been exposing "fresh" rock containing loads of heavy metals which erode and flow down the valley and have contaminated the entire valley meaning they can't grow anything there any more (and in those regions valleys are the main cultivatable land).

The big Welsh reservoirs mostly feed Birmingham.

And Liverpool. The traditional approach was to flood large parts of Wales and force communities to relocate so that English cities could have water. It was very popular in those parts obviously and no-one is still upset about it 2 centuries later. Their beautiful areas though to be fair.
