I think the reality is that they will all get it whether the window is open or not. It is too infectious now and still, I imagine, spreads before symptoms appear.

The only bit I have sympathy for is shaming kids into going to school when they are too sick and should be at home.

I'd be interested to see a chart/graph of changing rates of infectivity of covid over time/mutations, though I'd take some convincing that generally improving ventilation is a Good Thing for reducing the likelihood of infection. I suspect it's still nowhere near measles for infectivity.

F*ck me, there really isn't a topic you aren't prepared to be an utter prick about, is there?

No, because it gets more responses.

According to Copilot, R0 for Omicron was only 1.9 which compares to be 12-18 for measles. It's still pretty contagious, but if an open window would actually help then they should do it, I'm just sceptical it will make much difference - covid had some summer waves too.

I rarely bother directly responding. In fact most people don't.

He's gonna keep posting sh!te either way.

Trolls feed off interaction. They win when people respond, they win when people get outraged, they win when people call them names (because they know they've annoyed someone), they win when people think that reason will stop them. They aren't interested in reason or truth, only outrage. It's really not complicated.

If everyone ignores them, they dial up the outrage in the hope that someone will bite. If no-one does, they keep on dialling it up and up. Eventually they fizzle out in frustration if people can resist the temptation to think that logic is going to change the deliberately outrageous behaviour.

Lordy knows what they get out of demanding attention by shitting on everyone else's bed.

Thanks for the 'splain...

To be honest, that kind of pish is no less tedious (as much as I have a lot of time for much of what you post on here).

Thanks. Copilot also says that good ventilation is still effective in reducing spread (I asked about omicron specifically, but no idea how specific the below is).

Recommended Ventilation Levels

  • Air Changes per Hour (ACH): Aim for at least 5–6 ACH in occupied indoor spaces. This means the air in the room is replaced with fresh air 5–6 times per hour. Higher ACH (e.g., 8–12) is recommended in high-risk settings like hospitals or crowded public areas.
  • CO₂ Monitoring: Indoor CO₂ levels can be used as a proxy for ventilation. Keep CO₂ below 800 ppm to ensure adequate air exchange, especially in classrooms, offices, and meeting rooms.

Fairy nuff, though when I see vaguely sensible people like you rise to the bait and start calling names, I see the troll winning.

Well this is where we differ I suppose.

I have no problem calling him a prick when it's warranted, rather than ignoring him, and I don't see him "winning" either.

There was a time when trolls used to irritate me, but not any more. If that's how they choose to spend their time, so be it.

That is where you and Brian differ. He would like to suppress opposing comments , and make it a totally left leaning forum.

The ain't gonna happen.

I take no offence whatsoever from anyone.

All fair on forums :okay:

Argh this is exactly why AI is bad. It is just a confirmation bias engine.

Probably ventilation is more effective than mask wearing, or at least more effective than doing nothing. But the numbers themselves will either be drawn from. Some generic "what is good ventilation" source, or whatever guesstimate Chris Whitty had to hang his hat on 4 1/2 years ago in the absence of any data.

The aspect of the trolling I find "irritating" is where a sensible discussion is destroyed when 90% of the posts are some drivel from Twitter followed by quotes "You prick ..." and "Try reading fact ..." etc.

Indeed. It drowns out sensible discussion. I'd not stay in a pub where half of the tables were occupied by people trying to incite argument by shouting tosh they were reading on X. I might just stay if the sensible people just laughed at them and turned away.

I guess this is the perfect example of the troll winning...

I called someone a prick for being a prick about COVID, which I ended up with because of the stupidity of my employers and somehow here we are.

As for pubs, jeezo if people walked out of pubs where people were talking pish I don't think there would be many open.

Anyway, breaking news, England have walloped South Africa in the WWC. Or is that for the good news thread?

ETA - I also quite like when people post the facts stuff. Learned a lot from them, so it's not all bad.

As I said you want to suppress other people's opinions.
