Sounds good.

https://nation.cymru/news/cardiff-set-to-tackle-suv-carspreading-in-uk-first/

Cardiff Council is set to become the first local authority in the UK to introduce higher parking charges for SUVs and other heavy vehicles, in a move campaigners say will make city streets safer and fairer.

Councillors will vote today (Thursday, 16 October) on the city’s new Parking Plan, which proposes a surcharge for vehicles weighing over 2,400kg.

That threshold will later be lowered to 2,000kg for non-electric vehicles, while very large vehicles – those over 3,500kg – will be excluded from residential permits entirely.

The council report argues that “large heavy vehicles take up more parking space and are a danger to other road users.”

The local authorities proposals follow a consultation in which 66% of respondents supported higher charges for larger cars, compared with 24% who opposed the plan.

Apologies. You are absolutely right. I missed that.

I believe that the increase is due to debt. Most local councils are now in significant debt. The Government doesn't underwrite the debt so Councils have loans and pay interest. This is why many Councils are filing for bankruptcy. It's worth noting that the Tories deliberately underfunded and failed to help Labour councils.

Quite possibly, although you might expect that less central funding would be reflected in the wider tax burden - but as mentioned above it isn't. The wider point that Brian has inadvertently highlighted with his post is that as a country we are spending beyond our means with limited potential to extract more tax from already burdened economy and need to start reducing that spend. Unfortunately the current lot have shown themselves to be incapable of that.

Heavier vehicles?, will that include EVs (which are generally heavier than ICE vehicles) I wonder?
Yes, but very few of them. Most cars heavier than 2400kg are luxury cars - Bentley, Rolls Royce, BMW iX, various top end Mercedes and Audis.
The only EVs affected would be:
  • Kia EV9
  • Polestar 3 (some configs)
  • BMW i5 M60 XDrive
  • Volvo EX90
  • Audi Q6 e-tron
  • Newer EV Range Rover
  • Tesla X
All of these are pretty expensive luxury cars.

Many economists think that this is a false premise. We have tried austerity for years now. It isn't working.

Public spending on infrastructure and human capital on the other hand can boost growth and stimulate the economy.

So what's your point here, other than trying to score a cheap one with your usual whataboutery? 😉

That the rest of us have noticed that Government spending has dropped whilst taxes have increased for the last 15 years but you've only noticed it since Labour came into power and were perfectly happy with things prior to July 2024.

Lecornu escapes being censured in the French parliament, so lives to fight for another trusse, at least. Messy, to say the least.
