'Let's give it a try and see' isn't much better when you are talking about something that is basically a recreational thing and where legalising it has a risk but doesn't bring any massive public benefit, other than freeing up police time.
If legalisation implies regulated supply and sale then it should as the risk arising from additives etc would reduce.
AIUI it's fairly common for heroin addicts to suffer overdoses when they get an unexpected 'clean' dose rather than one that's adulterated.
Opoids on prescription are pure and without additives. So are cigarettes. The danger is in the nature of the product itself and in its addictiveness, surely.
( As an aside, interesting stats on UK drug deaths 2021 here. Mostly heroin and cocaine, mostly aged 45-49 Generation X ie born late 60's/70's, big North South divide, men have double the death rate of women.

I'm not saying cannabis is as addictive as legal opiates or illegal cocaine. But we do know there are long term effects and once it's legalised there will be no going back.
