I was never certain it would only hit the next generation onwards.

Extreme weather sounds all scary and stuff especially if they run like 20 articles about wildfires and stuff but why would you need facts right?
if you look at the Nasa data ( this https://gwis.jrc.ec.europa.eu/apps/gwis.statistics/seasonaltrend ) you see that the red line (current) is far below low the blue line (average) so despite all hype, at least for now the facts don't support the statement.

But the localised trend, even there is extremes. Some miss out all together whilst others like Greece get a 700%+ extreme.

'Events' are more common making the uncommon quite common.

'The safety argument for a 20mph limit is overwhelming with multiple studies finding it will save lives. If a driver slams on the brake then at the point a 20mph car would have stopped a 30mph car would still be doing 24mph.'

In congested areas I imagine it cuts pollution too.

That braking stat has to be why you tend to die when hit as 30 and live at 20mph.

Hit me at 40mph there’s an 80% chance I’ll die. Hit me at 30mph there’s an 80% chance I’ll live.

Surely, the key objective is not to have vehicles colliding with pedestrians/cyclists/cars/other vehicles?

Not really .. the key objective is to minimise harm/death.

(so for example, low-speed parking impacts are not a high priority. And cyclists hitting each-other is no big deal.)
