Who actually cares?

This.

So, so much.

Nope.

I have 100 sheep. 45 of them are white sheep. 20 of them are black sheep. 15 of them are blue sheep, 10 are green sheep and 10 are yellow sheep.
The majority of sheep (by category) are therefore white. All other coloured sheep are minority groups compared to the 45 white sheep.

To further labour the point, in Leicester, firstly we need to consider whether we are talking about the shire (89% white British) or the city (45% white British). Then we factor in "White Other" which takes Leicester City to 50% and Leicestershire to 92%.

...
You are of course right, but there's more to it. You illustrate perfectly how the end result, which group ends up looking like a minority or majority, depends on definitions, and the choice of definitions reflects our racial prejudices.

If I want white to look like a minority, I choose to compare white to non-white. That choice clearly reflects racist thinking (non-white is only a meaningful category if there is something privileged about white).

If i want white to look like a majority, i can compare white to each other ethnic group. If i were to find that, say, in a non-Leicester hypothetical scenario, Asian was bigger than white, i could still make white a majority by splitting Asian into Indian, Pakistani, Chinese, Japanese, etc, smaller groups until white becomes a majority again. That again is privileging white.

But even the category white is dubious. We've already had pointed out that white British may need to be considered differently from white non-British (lumping them all together really is saying you care more about skin colour than culture or identity). And who gets to say that "white British" includes Scottish but not Irish?

There is no single right answer- but the choices we each make tell us a lot about the racist biases we all operate under.

Why are you here (on NACA) if your thoughts, and opinions are fully formed, and totally immutable ??
Why shouldn't I be able post on here, because I think differently to the other half dozen or so that can be arsed coming on?

As for how my views have developed, being around for 56yrs, growing up on a rough Council Estate, working hard and experiencing things like most people I would imagine?

How about you?

Was your line about instantly dismissing (the views of?) anyone that holds a different opinion simply an attempt at provocative humour? It’s so hard to tell sometimes.

I didn't say you shouldn't be here.

I was wondering why, you're here, if you immediately ignore anyone who doesn't think what you think.

It suggests that your mind is made up and fixed, and that you're not interested in what anyone else says, or thinks..
Hence your own claim to 'intolerance'

Yes my thoughts and opinions also come about as a result of my upbringing, and subsequent life, but also from seeing, listening to and getting to know other people who's lives are not like mine.

Even being on here is part of that.

To bring us back on topic that's why representation, and a rich diversity of people are important in in our media, so we can see other people's pov, and imagine how it might be, to be them.

It probably will be now..:okay:

Remember the opt in / opt out.

"I was only joking" defence...

If the seriously made assertion doesn't find such an appreciative audience..??

Colloquially known as "Schrödinger s douchebag"

But it's probs got another name too..

Sure you'll make the part your own. .

And after all there's a whole merry franchise to exploit, all the action figures, and maybe even a prequel.??

'Team Queerio' surely must be a t shirt by now.

If it isn't, it should be...🌈

There are several flavours of queerio based t-shirts, I must buy one!

Your italics made me think of this clip -

Isn't your mind made up and fixed? You think a certain way about things and in your opinion it's the correct way, as I do mine, no difference whatsoever.

The final point is of course, "Why does it matter"?

In the case of Superman, we also have to take into account that we are not talking about Clark Kent, but Jon Kent, Clark's son. SO we aren't suddenly talking about hetero superman turning gay, we are talking about Superboy becoming Superman and also exploring his own sexuality. So, as he has his own identity, then it's perfectly feasible that he isn't hetero.

It may be the final point, but, IMHO, it is the most important point.

Nope, my mind is not 'made up and fixed'.

I have certain principals about certain things..

Through which I will tend to filter new information .

But there's a whole host of subjects and situations, that I've not even encountered, about which I've not even started thinking yet.

And people and perspectives I've not met , that may yet change my view somewhat.
