The conference has already been good for the environmentally friendly pastime of plane spotting.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-59114688

There were of course far too many planes to be parked up at Glasgow for the duration; as at G7 in Newquay a lot of them had to fly out again. There was a Thai Airforce aircraft routing to Stansted from GLA on Sunday. As the big wigs are getting ready to leave they're now routing back to GLA. Australian Airforce A330 just gone behind my gaff off Stansted for GLA.

Blimey, I thought they'd just started and they're clearing off already.

I heard Boris mention James Bond, but lost interest after that, so the attention span of world leaders is roughly equal to mine.

So we apparently are going to stop deforeststation, does that mean they finally stop lying about the environmentally friendlyness off bio-mass or is that lie being upheld? and if so how are they gonna call the process of killing young trees just for the biomass? And no replanting the same amount of trees back does'nt help, forest need time to develop.

I don't have much high hopes call me cynical, but for example my local council announce an ''climate emerncency just before the pandemic, meanwhile they have approved over 3000 ''houses'' to be build without any being prepared to go off gas, having extra insulation and so on. But they still get planning permission it isn't even mentioned or asked after.

It's just gonna be a other ploy that makes the rich richer and the poor poorer and the climate won't change a thing. i hope i'm wrong but i don't have high hopes dat i am.

The UK government, or the devolved administrations unless the issue is reserved, have the power to prescribe things like insulation, heat pumps and solar cells on the roof. They're not planning matters.

UK gov are in the pocket of developers so don't expect mandating of eco-builds any time soon.

Well the 'world leaders' don't really get involved in the negotiations (thankfully or otherwise) they're just there to show support (or otherwise) for the general drift.

There's still almost two weeks of meeting , main and side..

At least it's sunny so far..

But that's the point- they are planning matters, which trickles down from strategic long term planning by LAs. It is Parliament that needs to lead by making planning law which prescribes the LAs' Planning Departments and Building Regulations Approved Documents [ADs] to force developers and retrofit alterations to existing housing stock to take energy conservation and carbon reductions seriously.

We are getting there in the building industry but far too slowly... lobbyists from the NHF have effectively killed off many of the programmes, like Code for Sustainable Homes which started in the 90s. We would have been at CfSH Level 5 [carbon neutral] for all new homes by 2016 had the Gov't not caved in.

Of course they are.

@Bromptonaut ought to go to a few planning meetings before making bold assertions.

Local planners could flex their muscles a bit more, although part of the problem in the north east is new housing developments are routinely seen as a good thing.

Might be different in nimby land in the south east and south west.

Hundreds of COP26 delegates have gathered at Festival Park to shun politicians for inaction over global warming.

The teenage climate activist has been leading the ongoing event and has called for world leaders to take the future "seriously".

And she hasn't been holding in her demands she addressed a sea of protestors with pickets.

She said: "Inside COP there are politicians pretending to take our future seriously.

“We say no more blah-blah-blah, no more exploitation of people, nature and the planet. No more whatever the f*** they’re doing inside there.”

Meanwhile, Sir David Attenborough addressed more than 100 world leaders at the opening ceremony of COP26.

In his speech, he warned that humanity is “already in trouble” from climate change.

The climate campaigner charted carbon emissions throughout human history, which has peaked at 414 parts per million.

He said: “Our burning of fossil fuels, our destruction of nature, our approach to industry, construction and learning, our releasing carbon into the atmosphere – we are already in trouble."

Agree it needs to be top down implementation.

Of course the planners as in the employed people in the planning dept , can only implement or interpret policy from the local plan, the LA and central gov..

But Central gov need to take bolder action, on making big scale housebuilders do the right thing .

Use their legislative powers for some good .
That would be helpful.

Alongside, putting in place funding for retrofitting older property, for low income households .
