Technically it was John Wayne after his single handed liberation of Paris. Is Mr Wayne available for the annexation of Panama?

Ian

The hell he is.

And they won WW2. I've seen it in films.

Essentially, they and the Russians did just that. The UK was suspicious of the Russians, but desperate to get the US to engage (Japan was helpful in that respect). The Americans came to Europe and have never left.

Trump has been sentenced for 34 felony counts of falsifying business records.

For this he has received no jail time and no fine.

What a total and utter waste of time.

Has the court got scared?

I’ll have you know that the US courts have the finest judges money can buy!

The gist of it seems to be that any other sentence would have proved problematic due to the various rules that apply to US Presidents. They went for the "no punishment" option so that he is now a convicted felon and cannot use any of his powers to undo that. I presume that any other sentence he could have used presidential powers to get nullified by the Supreme Court or some such.

Did anybody really think that this was not going to happen?

The fact of his election victory changed everything and, despite leaving a very nasty taste in the mouth, was the only pragmatic action to take given the potential for real political upheaval and possible civil unrest.

To me it screams volume about US legal system and law enforcement. "Rule of law"?

Ian

No legal system is completely pure, not ours and certainly not the US one. They do not exist in a vacuum, uncompromised by and free from the influence of the societies they serve.

The decision made is not one I like but I can fully understand why it was made.

Apparently the law is quite selective. Many MAGAs get quite excited about their second amendment rights, but very few are as enthusiastic about the fourteenth amendment

Fourteenth Amendment Equal Protection and Other Rights

  • Section 3 Disqualification from Holding Office

No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

I can't help, but wonder if other people found guilty of comparable offences would get similar punishment. Can eg a business person appeal a prison term appeal on the grounds that others got nothing.
