McConnell is a trans identifying woman.
The statements are typically hyperbolic...
'..shatter trans lives'
'.. tell me you're willing to destroy my life'
...with no consideration for how giving men access to their spaces will affect women.
Men's lives are not shattered by not being allowed access to women's changing rooms, refuges, rape crisis centres, jails, hospital wards, or sports. In fact, McConnell's examples of things that will destroy trans people's lives are pretty weak:
'..banned from loos and shelters' - the toilet situation can be solved by having additional mixed sex 3rd spaces or enclosed facilities. Shelters? It is not shattering to a man's life to refuse him a place in a shelter or refuge that is for women because other provision can be made. It might be very traumatic to women who have suffered male violence or rape to have to share with him though.
"A women-only gardening club with more than 25 members will be legally required to exclude a trans woman, even if she’s legally a woman, and even if her fellow members want her there". It isn't Women Only if men can join. They can just call it mixed sex and the problem is solved.
What else? Well trans people weren't snubbed by the supreme court - it wasn't a consultation. They had the Scottish government and trans orgs advocating in court on their behalf.
McConnell claims the law on puberty blockers changed because of lobbying by groups they call 'well funded'. It didn't. It changed because Cass's 4 year review could find no benefit. Other countries have since followed suit. Most women's rights groups are funded by small donations, unlike trans orgs which get central funds and council/government money.
All in all, it's a straightforward disingenuous take which gives zero consideration to how loss of single sex spaces might affect women, with a bit of guilt tripping and 'first they came for the trans' to round it off.
