And of course the mullahs had to charge them for showing their hair

There's a book called Persepolis, written by Marjaneh Satrapi, which tells the story of the revolution through Marjaneh's eyes as she grows up. The hejab mandate came in when she was in primary school, and there's a scene in the book where Marjaneh's dad argues with the school principal about primary school girls having to wear it. At some point Marji's dad loses his rag and tells the principal that if women showing their hair is such a bad thing maybe she should shave her moustache.

Brilliant book. The film adaptation is top notch too.

She directed the film too.

There was an updated version a few years ago too, Persepolis 2.0, which was about the Iranian election at the time. Struggling to find it online, but I know the creators did it with Satrapi's blessing.

She's done a few other films (and books) too - Chicken with Plums and The Voices were particularly good.

She also directed a documentary/ biopic about Marie Curie that was on BBC 4 a couple of years ago. Very talented.

Tech savvy people use relays, vpns and other tricks. Elderly people who aren't tech savvy not so much. When I said we, I mean us, personally not being able to contact.
I think it probably depends on how the internet is "shut down". When I was travelling in India up by the Jamu & Kashmir border the Indian Gov. shut down the internet (as they do) and neither VPN nor ISP routes worked to anywhere (neither within India nor to other countries) nb both VPN and ISP links worked before the shutdown).

I suspect that they've only shut down outgoing routes, and probably only partially. We think Internet within the country still works to some extent.

All uphill

Slow and steady
Seems like Khamenii has nothing to offer the population. Perhaps he remembers that the Shah making minor concessions sealed his fate.
