You know, when the transcripts of western leaders meetings from this period come out I'm pretty sure they will all excoriate Nethanyahu and his war.

What elected politicians want to say, and what they can say are not the same.

Also, as you well know from my input in other threads, I believe that politicians have a much more limited range of options in front of them (most of which are shìt) than it would appear for a variety of reasons.

It's like the various energy wars that have occurred in the last 35 years. Horrid, and all about oil and not morality and we are incensed by them.

But could we countenance petrol stations running dry, houses left unheated and energy reliant industry grinding to a halt? Could we fûck.

I listened to that podcast you recommended yesterday. It is clear from that what western leaders, including US (Democrat) presidents think of him. Netanyahu was good at playing/stymieing the US presidents, understanding and using the level of support there has historically been for Israel in that country, and if the US efforts came to nothing, even under Clinton and Obama there is no chance of other western countries making a difference, and less than none under Trump.

Events in Syria could make things even more dangerous in that area.

Did you find it interesting?

I find their podcasts highly entertaining. This one was a little more sombre for obvious reasons. The Jordan Peterson was a master take down as was the Liz Truss episode. There is a two parter on the Sufragettes which was fascinating. Quite shocked by how little I knew about them.

It was good and made some interesting points about Netanyahu's cunning and his past ability to make allegiances rather than maintain them. Haven't listened to them before, but I will pop in there from time to time, although I wasn't too keen on the occasional inane laughter of the secondary bloke.

I think a central premise of the programme is the two presenters trying to out do each other in digging up the most mental material, or complaining about drawing the short straw in having to read things like Liz Truss's autobiography and being resentful about it for the whole episode. It's sort of schoolboyish, but it makes me chuckle.

Recommend the Suffragette two parter though. They do a very thorough job, and you can see how myths have developed over the years.

Interesting goings on today to the NW of Israel. Rebels are 5 miles from Damascus and the Assad regime is taking to the airwaves to deny that he has fled the country.

Looks like Assad has bounced.

Hard to determine which way things will go at this point, especially with the involvement of Turkey, Russia and Iran, and probably Israel (Syria was a supply route for weapons from Iran to Hezbollah), but this will have a knock-on effect for Israel.

For the Syrian population it will only get worse. It is likely that the islamists will form some kind of caliphate II, at least in some areas, with possibly Iran and Russia supporting the resistance to them. Turkey will keep pushing against the Kurdish people allying themselves to whoever can help them best for this purpose. The Saudis will be happy that there's one less non-religious estate in the area.

Yet another Irak.

I'm afraid that this is the beginning of a new phase of fighting, not the end of war.

It's a widening of the civil war.

But in a conflict that has already claimed 500,000 lives (yes, it puts Gaza into some sort of perspective).

I don't know enough about the factions involved to make sense of it, but, broadly it looks like a shia/sunni conflict, with various big international players either overlooking what is going on (US-ish) or supporting (Turkey, Israel-ish)

I think it is probably appropriate to post about it in here, because it looks as if the two are in some way linked on the chessboard that is the middle east.

If reports are true, the speed of collapse of the Assad regime is startling, and the question is whether they will push on into Lebannon. Whilst Israel has aided them by their near constant air attacks on Assad's forces, I cannot envisage a situation where Israel will want them on their border.

It's about 40 miles from the Syrian border to Beirut. There are 23 minutes of traffic jams on the way out of Syria...

Your enemy's enemy does not always turn out to be your friend.

The phrase 3D chess is apt when trying to work out what could happen in the middle east, other than it will involve more fighting.

Today on TV reports, the population appear to be cheering and shouting freedom, how many days/weeks before the women lose their rights and freedom? The new leaders speech contained too many references to “god” for my taste.

Funny how the "god" word is so often a cause for alarm, whether you are a child, woman or just a man who thinks independently.
