Whilst I am loathe to in any way support the actions of the Israeli state, and yes, it is opportunistic, I can see why they've done it.

There is a likelihood of enormous instability in Syria, much more than over the past half century, with unknown actors likely to seize power, eventually. Right on Israel's border...which is precisely 0 miles from Syria pre-67. The Israelis want a security buffer because the eastern Med countries are about to change significantly. I doubt it is about land for settlement.

Also, it is worth remembering that all these countries are fictional entities thought up by Sykes and Picot. Sometimes this shît has to play through a bit.A century is not a long time.

It's against international law.

Having been there, the place is one farking big minefield....

If I were Israel, then I’d be quite concerned about who the new actors running the Syrian state are and what their intentions may be, Golan Heights are quite strategic and Israel will want control of them until the dust settles ( and potentially longer)

They already have control. Siezing them is against international law. Having been there it's one big farking minfield anyhow.

Who is the arbiter of "international law", because we, the UK, seem to have got off scot free for invading and trashing Iraq on fabricated evidence (along with the US)

All that maybe so but they already had a big buffer zone and have had for over 50 years, it's called the Golan Heights. They have occupied and built settlements against international law, there are around 30,000 Israeli's now living there, IMO what they are doing now is just a further land grab using military force to occupy territory of another country.

Lebensraum perchance? Sudetenland? Peace in our time?

To my mind, if Israel ever wants to live in peace and security it has to sit down with its neighbours and talk and come to some agreements. When new neighbours arrive 1st thing Israel does is send in fighter aircraft and bomb them. To me that's not seeking peace and security but just a path for eternal military conflict.

Good point.

Maybe the right in Israel don't want to live in peace with their neighbours; maybe they just want their neighbour's land.

They don't trust their neighbours, and given that their neighbours launched three wars against them who can blame them.

But we are a long way away from the Israel of the last century. The Israel of today wants their land.

I agree but it further highlights the endless wars wars Israel is building as it doesn't trust those neighbours even when those neighbours have only "moved in" 1 day ago and have shown no hostility to Israel, not even giving them a chance to be friendly Israel bombing them. Even when those new neighbours have in effect ousted the country Israel sees as it's primary enemy. So I see that is that Israel wont trust any neighbours whoever or whatever they are ... which means no peace.

It sees Iran as its primary enemy. It knew where it was with Assad.

But...it is not clear who is now running Syria. What we do know is that the history of what appears to be the primary rebel group includes affiliation with AQ and IS.

Much as I think the Israeli state is founded on ethnic-cleansing, and that it is now a war-criming, probably genocidal, state, I would do exactly the same as they are doing WRT Syria.

I wouldn't be taking chances on unknown people.
