Yeah, good job that the idea of unaccountable elites plotting in smoke-filled rooms is just a leftist conspiracy theory. Should I expect to be accused of antisemitism by David Baddiel any minute now?

It'll take you about 30 seconds to find out why but how could people blame Brexit then?

Following your advice, I searched the Internet. The above article was the first hit referring to this year's shortage. Two things to note

1. Only specialist media seem to talk about it, no mention in general circulation media, make of that what you will

2. Reading the article, Brexit is very much part of the problem. The added controls introduced after Brexit have caused an increase of between 100 and 400% in the cost of imported tomato seed, again, make of that what you will

Indeed Brexit is a part of the equation, with vendors having to turn to Morocco for supplies.

So if Brexit has caused 'global energy prices to increase' to a degree that growers can't afford to heat their greenhouses then it must be.

A snippet from 'Wales on line'.

"UK tomato production is reliant on greenhouses being heated to 20°C. With the increase in energy prices some of the key producers have had to reduce to delay planting crops in a bid to be able to afford to grown them. The National Farmers' Union has confirmed these problems are currently affecting all fruit and vegetable growers across the UK – not just tomato farmers. President Minette Batters told the BBC: "British food is under threat... at a time when global volatility is threatening the stability of the world's food production, food security, and energy security. I fear the country is sleepwalking into further food supply crises with the future of British fruit and vegetable supplies in trouble."

Brexit is also an issue a more than 90% of tomatoes sold in supermarkets are imported. Before Spain was Britain's biggest supplier of tomatoes but it is now Morocco where most of the produce comes from. Morrisons supermarket has told shoppers that bad weather in the two countries has had an effect on supplies too."

Brexit causes bad weather in Spain and Morocco!

Brexit trade regulations have meant that supplies from EU countries such as Spain have decreased. So we have fewer suppliers to turn to for our food.

At the risk of being uncharacteristically conciliatory, no one's entirely wrong here, are they? Brexit obviously affects food supply and environmental and energy factors obviously affect growing. And should we continue to expect mountains of fresh tomatoes in February, Brexit or no Brexit?
