But according to commentary on Tom Newton Dunn's prog yesterday morning Truss is the likely successor if Johnson walks in front of the proverbial bus. Very popular with the Tory Membership apparently.

Truss? As in Liz Truss? As in that Liz Truss? Of cheese importing outrage fame? She is the best our governing party can muster? Who are the other candidates? Captain Chaos and Caligula?

I feel like I am living through the last days of Rome

Both have a role. MP votes produce a shortlist of two with the final choice between them left to the membership.

In 2019 it was Johnson v Jeremy Hunt.

In 2016 it was going to be Theresa May v Andrea Leadsom but the latter withdrew.
And Johnson knew that if he could only get onto that membership ballot he was home and dry, despite every even vaguely thoughtful person recognising that he was completely unsuited to be PM, because the conservative party membership are, in aggregate, going to go for froth, appearance, superficialities, dog whistles, and image, all things that Johnson is very very good at. We could all see the disaster unfolding before us , it's not as if his rise and the subsequent fall of the country were unexpected.

Should I take a daily photo of the Tesco Express over the road with full shelves just to level the playing field?

Just got back from Tescos in Newcastle... lots of shelving padded out with toilet rolls and artificial Christmas trees [£15 for a five foot one or @20 for a six foot one].

The shelves being full at a branch of a shop with the business ethics of somewhere like Tesco would not impart to me any useful information about the state of the economy. The shelves being empty on the other hand, most certainly would.
