Oh no!! Brexit not going quite as well as hoped

Political expediency is more often a problem, but where it co-incides with respecting the result of a referendum it isn't.
Handy if you’re happy with the result, I suppose.

How about if, for example, a right wing government decided that the best way to keep the nutters on board was to have a referendum on restoring the death penalty?

Did France leave the EU and not tell anyone? Is this an EU nation controlling their borders?

I was relieved to find having dual nationality means I could still travel through France. That said, I have heard enough scare stories from my sister as to sudden rule changes from Boris that can entail you having to take PCR tests you have to pay for (up to £200) or being forced into quarantine in a hotel designated by the govt that you also have to pay for (£1200 or more) not to take the risk of going anywhere near the UK for the foreseeable future.

Good question. Pragmaticly, I doubt such a general referendum would be run as the instances of people wrongly executed would hit the news. If it were we'd all have to have a debate of such seriousness it really would be 'us and them' time.

The takeaway from the article is that the US are prepared to play hardball with isolated and weakened nations when it comes to trade negotiations. The shameful Irish border situation may well be a factor too. Who could have foreseen any of that?

Is a subtext that the US wants to exert leverage on further privatising the NHS though?

On another level, the global import export market needs to be run down in the interests of the climate. A sensible UK government would simply subsidise steel enough for local needs as a long term investment.

It already is…

I agree but I can’t see it happening in a controlled way. There are too many short term interests at play for that level of forward thinking to gain democratic power.

With many grey areas. All the more cause to study, talk with people we differ with, and practise becoming more reasoned.

Likewise regarding steel subsidies and other climate related issues. 'Democratic' power is not something we have in great abundance either. This is why I am up for regional devolution. London's big bubble is empty of real promise.

You can see that coming though. If it meant the sleaze machine could hang on for yet another term, they'd go with it. It won't be long before they test the waters on this, if they haven't already.

I have no doubt that it remains a possibility, and the Farage grift machine has talked about pushing for it.

We know Patel was (is?) in favour.

And her she is telling a blatant lie about her support.

Well, one of the sticking points of the UK-USA trade deal is opening up the NHS to US healthcare firms.
