You have no idea how long I've been waiting for an Assassin's Creed set in Tenochtitlan at the height of the Mexica empire. Still waiting...
These are all words, but they make no sense to me.

Author Margaret Atwood is currently getting some criticism on social media. Someone has now put her home address in Toronto on Twitter and it is still up 6 hours later, despite many reports to Twitter. I've no doubt Atwood lives on a big plot and can afford adequate security, so people turning up at the end of her drive to demonstrate might be alarming but not insurmountable. But it only takes one unhinged person to take things beyond that.

Most of us don't have the money for security or moving house if we are doxxed online. It's really not safe to waive anonymity on social media, especially for women.

The people abusing others online, are the same people who shout obscenities out of van windows at women on bikes.

Who do racist bullying on tube trains

Or beat up (and far worse) 'the queers' they encounter in Trafalgar Square.

Yes they're all bullies, and yes we stand up to them when we can.

But we also have the right to choose to protect ourselves, and our kin, from them, where necessary.

Sadly in this world there are some nasty, and ignorant people.

Who have a disproportionate affect on our lives, and on social media.

Who deliberately confuse 'having an opinion' and 'free speech' with the right to just say the first horrible thing that comes into their heads.

It's not free speech, if you're inciting violence or hatred.

I know this is probably veering off topic, but I hear a lot about removing anonymity from social media etc.

How would this work?

I set up a new email address, download a VPN and I could be anyone from anywhere, surely?

Unless the government plan to shut down VPNs and join in the game of whack-a-mole with China, I am really not sure what they plan to do.

And, as you say, anonymity is an important safeguard for some on the internet. Plus a lot of the most hateful speech is not done anonymously - many are proud of their hateful views whilst others are just a bit to stupid to figure out how the internet works and not really anonymous at all.

Clearly itā€™s a silly idea that wonā€™t work as intended but I expect thereā€™s an opportunity for a company to be chosen as a mandatory identity verification service, perhaps using a credit card payment to sign up. Obviously the business idea would only be successful if it had a Tory peer on the board.

I wonder what Baroness Harding is up to these days.

I've been expecting this Government to start talking about outlawing VPNs & services like TOR since Theresa May was Home Sec & talking up the types of restrictions & censorship used in China.

I wonder ifthe only reason it hasn't happened yet is that no-one's told them about these things.

All I can see happening is that those determined enough would find a way round whatever system was used, and those who didn't/can't would end up being abused/stalked/doxxed by people who disagree with them.

I seem to recall that much of the online racist abuse aimed at England players was found to originate outside the UK, so I can't even see how it would reduce abuse that much anyway. As you say, VPN's can be used to get round it anyhow.

Probably.

I'd imagine the look of dawning realisation over Boris Johnson's face when he found out about these things would be hilarious.

"There's... there's what? We should jolly well put a stop to this!"

"Well... you can try. Good luck to you."
