Looks like Angela Raynor has tonight apologised for her 'scum' comments about the Tories. Bit after the event but welcome nonetheless.

Yes read that tonight. Also a man has been charged and there have been other arrests for threats against Angela Rayner.
So the Tory politicians and media who decided to stoke the fire against her should maybe apologize to ?

I would prefer that politicians on all sides dialled down the overwrought language. Which politicians, and which comments, specifically, do you think they should apologise for?

Mmm where to start.....Johnson ? We'll be here all night

What did he say specifically to 'stoke the fire against her' (Angela Raynor)? We all know he's written racist stuff as a columnist.

He has, but we are talking about Raynor in particular atm. I'm not sure anything the equivalent of 'scum' has been directed at her or Labour in response. I don't think Johnson is fit to lead a major political party, but Raynor's comments suggest she isn't either.

Fair enough that's your view....I'm not so sure.Meanwhile the Torygraph today.
Yesterday it was revealed that Angela Rayner received death threats leading to a man’s arrest, today the Telegraph front page on what she said. There’s such a double standard on how media thinks about abuse, threats & harassment.

I don't think it is a coincidence that Angela Rayner has apologised/retracted at the same time as somebody has been sentenced for threats to her/her family. Two others have been arrested and are being interviewed/investigated for similar offences. It's quite apparent she's has had a deluge of threats, not just to her but to her children as well. She's also on compassionate leave following the loss of a loved one so it's reasonable to conclude she's at a low ebb anyway.

Even mainstream commentators have tried to suggest a link between her remarks and the murder of David Amess. The reality, based on the limited facts available whilst there are live court proceedings, is that the motive was associated with Islam and possibly Middle East/African politics and that the crime was long in the planning.

Retraction seems to be an attempt to dial down the rhetoric.

Whether the 'scum' comment was or was not over the top the fact that she's effectively been intimidated into withdrawal/apology is not a good thing for political discourse.

As I think Is may have pointed out (several times) before..

The likelihood of the language or position of a left leaning woman , having any effect of the thought processes of an extremist influenced by Islamic fundamentalism, is slim to non existant.

Trying to pin that , on the maybe ill advised language used at a meeting of the party is really scraping that old Tory barrel, bigly..

Meanwhile many people will still say that routine threats against female politicians are exaggerated.

And that they just need to 'toughen up'.

I don't think her comments had anything to do with David Amess's murder. I would hope Raynor hasn't been intimidated into apologising. I'd rather think she has reflected on whether using such language is appropriate or helpful and recognised that it isn't.

Political discourse is alien to Raynor and has nothing to do with her ignorance and immaturity.

She's been 'intimidated' into growing up.

Well as a decent person that is what you would think..

However there will still be others, rather less than decent, who will try to imply that her words were in some way related to his murder.

In no way shape or form does intimidated require your use of that well known journalistic tic of pejorative quote marks.

Vile threats were made to her and her family. She was nothing other than well and truly intimidated; no qualification required.
