Society is not incapable of living side by side with well trained dogs. The trouble is, a lot are not sufficiently trained so some people treat all dogs as potentially troublesome/dangerous. I don't think the current population of domesticated dogs has been this high for 30000 years. Personally I don't mind dogs but I still think they shouldn't be running around, as not everyone likes them
I broadly agree, but the "not everyone likes" threshold is problematic. Dogs absolutely should run around. It's what they do. This doesnt mean they shouldn't also be supervised and come when they are called. Nor should we be be so intolerant that we react to a friendly young dog in the process of being trained as though it was an XL bully used for fighting.

My analogy to cycling was similar, in that it used to be normal to see kids riding in parks (it is where I was taught) but now you are as likely to see them berated. Same with people trundling on a pavement or plaza. People react like it is a drunk driver of an articulated lorry coming towards them. It is intolerant and disproportionate*.

*But anyone who leaves dog poo behind should be incarcerated on the spot without trial.

If a person is leaving dog poo behind they should see a doctor

Dogs absolutely should run around. It's what they do.

Indeed, but where I live there are at least two fantastic places within five minutes walk of the town centre where they can do just that, to their hearts' content, and there's even nearby parking for those who can't (be bothered) walk there. All maintained by the council or volunteers, and free for everyone to use however much they want to.

Everywhere else is road and pavement, and dogs should be under close control on a lead there at all times, so as not to cause unnecessary risk to people, other dogs, and traffic of all kinds (especially cyclists).

It's really not at all complicated.

Should they be given instructions on how to kill and cook their pets instead?

A modest proposal.
