I read that, but having first hand knowledge of swearing in Galician/Portuguese/Spanish, I'm surprised by the conclusions regarding the type of swearing compared to Italian. I would say that the top swearing type is the same in all four languages. I shït on god/mary/christ are standard form for everyday swearing.

I'm not sure that the research was as extensive as it purports to be. There are a few (in)decent academic studies of swearing (including Benjamin Bergen's 'What The F'), though most of the ones I've got focus on English. It is a genuinely fascinating area of research, as it has implications for both linguistics and brain function studies.

Um, having checked the affiliation of the Spanish research partner, they work at a private university adjacent to the catholic orbit. It is possible that someone data selection bias may have found its way accidentally into the data.

Yeah, I was pleased to see that, TBH. He did seem to be the unluckiest man in the UK.

This is the extent of our exchange:

He doesn't seem to get much response to his posts, so I guess he can get stuff off his chest out into the ether without people mentioning Nate Silver.

Now he's on my Bluesky radar, I'm so far resisting the temptation to reply to his posts, especially since he didn't even have the decency to 'like' my reply to him. Maybe the Nate Silver incident left its mark after all.

I'm surprised at his surprise since IIRC you were touting Bluesky from the start.
I could be wrong.

Actually, it was him who said the only way it worked was if you followed lots of people, which was good advice (I can't remember who got there first). But I guess it was the first time he'd seen one of my posts, randomly, as I was replying to a comment about train travel. I'm not sure if he does much more than post the odd opinion, as he doesn't appear to interact with many people there, and has 165 followers to the 617 he follows. (For comparison, I'm 417/1.7k) I suspect he's (probably wisely) a lot less active on social media than he was on CS.

How many of those are French women of a certain age?

AFAIK, none.

In the early days there were quite a lot of obvious pornbots, whom I blocked (even I have certain standards), but I suspect most of the rest have done it out of politeness as 'return follows'. A few are cyclists and photography people, but the rest seem to be random, and I've no idea why they follow, as they don't interact much, unlike the French FB women.

Just certain cohorts, and we might be better off without them.

Top tip: never open up black walnuts from their outer casing with your fingers without wearing gloves. I did so on Monday, and the immediate staining of the skin is very noticeable and won't wash off: it looks like I've had a 40-a-day habit since forever.

It's interesting, as the flesh in the casing is white, but clearly there's a chemical in there that reacts with human skin to produce the dark yellow/orange staining. Maybe paging @First Aspect for a chemist's hunch, given your input on the green carrot water experiment.
