To me there is nothing wrong with that extension. It does not block the light of other house/gardens too much or invade privacy, and the most important thing is the internal design and the pleasure the owners get out of it. They spend more time inside looking out than outside looking in, and I am not convinced their neighbours spend much time sitting in their gardens looking at the extension, especially those in the messy garden next door. If so they need to get a life.

We get far too concerned how a house looks and fits in with its neighbours in what is a bog standard neighbourhood of no particular architectural significance.

When I saw the photo of the extension I wondered about the occupants appearance which I imagine is just as plastic.

RJS would be proud of all this architectural banter. Actually, thanks to him I subscribe to several architectural accounts on Bluesky, and I do actually find it interesting to see what I like/don't like, and try to work out why. I don't like bland, and I'd rather people take risks... but sometimes you just go "Oh god, just no!"

I see your point, but people have to live in that " bog standard neighbourhood of no particular architectural significance", so I think they have some right to not have their views/environment ruined. All very subjective of course ...

Exactly.

Views/environment "ruined" is subjective. "Changed" less so, and there is usually no right to have no change.

I live in a fairly bog standard neighbourhood and in recent years 90% of the houses and bungalows (including ours and both next door neighbours) have been changed and extended significantly. I cannot say that any of them are aesthetically pleasing but they do not obstruct my light so, after some initial "oh I don't think much of that extension" comments between me and my wife, it hasn't impacted on us one iota and certainly not "ruined" anything.
