My younger son, as a teenager, used to be easily annoyed when I referred to soccer and explained that the name, association football, distinguished it from rugby football.

This is fun @First Aspect

Since we're here, and why not?

Your gen on Montreal? I thought it was a mint race, and Russell would be justifiably raging.

Who do you support, football wise?

Rowing I know the square root of f*ck all about.

Baseball, however? Where would you like to start?

I’m surprised how many fans are unaware of this in UK. As a child the game was often called soccer, will out the howls of “what’s that, something Americans play”.

Its a great wind up tho’.

Like many clubs, Exeter is 'Exeter AFC', though sometimes one might be forgiven for wondering if the A stands for 'amateur'.

Not this one. 'Banter' is leaves quite a wide berth.

BTW, it was a most excellent day at Calstock, even if I didn't take a diversion for a coffee. The people who are in Ferry Farm are friends of my Tavistock friends, so might call in there for coffee next time. I was in Calstock for just a couple of hours yesterday, but with a decent stroll around, reckon 4 hours would be nice on a good day.

I was of the understanding that "soccer" was the public school equivalent of "rugger".

Association Football being both the original form and a predominantly working class game, "soccer" was the lesser used term.

For whatever reason in the US rugby was the main import (Celtic immigrants perhaps), which morphed via impatience to allow one forward pass into (American) football, with the term "soccer" being used to distinguish the game that school girls and the entire rest of the world play.

Do you reckon they'd let me rent a 25ft by 2ft bit of land, near the water?

Dunno. I could get a contact via my friends, if you like. They've got quite a lot of space, by the look of it.

In my experience, farmers with a lot of space are as precious about every inch of it as someone living in a semi detached in Surbiton.

I need to explore the Cornish side to be honest. I put in quite often as Halton Quay, which is fine but no storage. Calstock Boatyard is the obvious one.

My main issue is how long it takes for me to get around to the Devon side to access the river for an impractical boat. The other issue with that Ferry Farm (there are several) is it is on the Tamara Trail, so in summer there are lots of earnest septuagenarians in matching hiking gear trying to get the ferry across. So they already put up with outbursts of "valderee valderaa" several times a day.

Yeah, bloody tourists. (Obviously I wasn't one yesterday. No, not me.) I imagine they have to just grin and bear it at FF, given it's very much a working farm, as you can see from the overhead angle on the viaduct.
