Plus, of course, even those who "get past the net" will need NHI Number, NHS Number some point, I would have thought, in order to access Welfare System (including Pensions) and/or Health Services. Perhaps these systems are in chaos too?

It is very unlikely, those who are irregular migrants and undetected and choose to stay as such will remain off grid unless they choose at some point to apply for Asylum.

Fodder to the "control of our borders" brigade, I would have thought.

They’ll feed on anything, they’re not too choosy.

It is not really classed as illegal but 'irregular migration' which accounts for anyone coming into the UK without authorisation (i.e. small boats), anyone overstaying a visa, anyone not leaving after a rejected asylum claim, and any child born to an unauthorised migrant. This includes detected and undetected persons and obviously those appearing in data will be detected.

Irregular or unathorised migrants can still apply for asylum at which point they become recorded as 'regular'.

Yeah but that wasn't my point.
If someone makes it on shore undetected then they can't be counted. Until they try to enter the system. Not everyone is coming for benefits.

Edit:- As you pretty much said upthread.

You asked how we know how many are illegal and also if some get past the net.

Some will that get past the net and obviously statistics can't record them as they are undetected.

Illegal as you put it are not referred to as illegal, but rather unathorised or undocumented. We know this number as they form one of the four groups I highlighted. This is how we know the number, they just aren't called illegal immigrants.

If I have misunderstood what you were asking happy to be corrected?

True. I would put it to you however that this number is very very small.

I happily acknowledge this fact. It still bemuses me that people feel free to give numbers without disclaimers.

No, no, it's mahoossive!! It's several double-decker-buses-full. I mean, possibly almost 0.0003% of the population of Ingerland.

But don't forget when they turn up at the Job Centre they hand them a huge cheque, the keys to a 5 bed detached house, a ferrari, a luxury yacht, your own personal GP and free food shopping for life....

How do you count the people mentioned below?
