Would I be correct to think that the big cities were too big to be allowed to totally collapse, but smaller places around the country didn't have the muscle or megaphone to fight back?

I have no idea if there was “official policy”, but, places like Sunderland did suffer badly and I think, given enough time they would have all but disappeared. In the case of Sunderland, the Nissan Plant probably delayed, if not stopped the decline.

Liverpool was not the only place where “managed decline” was practiced. Think “category D” villages in Co Durham.

and chunks of South Wales too

Funny, I always presumed that being an MEP followed by an MP, whilst leading a political party made you part of the "political establishment"? It's a bit like getting caught nicking a twix from the shop as a kid and claiming "the big boys made me do it".

Ahh, but, the difference is that Nigel didn’t become part of the Political Establishement willingly. He did it as a sacrifice on his part, for the good of us “working class” people, without a thought for himself. 😂

He's more establishment than 1/2 the Labour back bench.

The Times and The Telegraph being partly responsible for pushing the juggernaut of xenophobia and far right rhetoric down Consequence Hill and have now realised that the juggernaut doesn't have a handbrake.

Big brave Nigel isn’t even going to attend the final announcement of results.
Doesn’t want to be seen beating a bin.
What an absolute tool.

Claimed that Essex Police had warned him of a 'credible threat' to his safety. Essex Police outright deny this. Liar, liar, pants on fire Farage strikes again – as with Trump, the default assumption should be that he's lying, and he can't even blame dementia. Let all the investigations into him carry on with added vigour now.
