I couldn't reach Yr Wyddfa's summit because people jumped the queue

People going up by train complaining that they were stuck in a queue not having time to touch the top before their return back. It’s not fair that ‘fit people’ who hiked up scramble up the rocks and avoid the queue.

Exactly. She should just accept her limitations.

Why not have two trig points, one for pics for softies, and one for the supreme athletes who trek to the top and cba queuing? They're artificial constructs and not the actual top of the mountain.

Or build a "path" between the train station and the Trig Point that follows more significant descent, ascent, descent, ascent, maybe a rope to climb ... Maybe not the same achievement as climbing unassisted but less of an effortless lack of achievement for Social Media.

I must admit not having been up there for years since it became a thing to do.

Yep, there’s a great route up from Cwmgwdi but the selfie brigade tend to park at Pont ar Daf and take the motorway which is probably a good thing considering their lack of kit but even that route can get tougher than they seem to realise when the weather changes. I usually go from Torpantau. If you haven’t done it since lockdown you’d be shocked by the number of people up there. Same with the Skirrid and Sugar Loaf, I used to go up them as a kid and hardly see anyone.

I’m glad the rangers refuse to be involved in queuing disputes. Its a mountain not a bloody theme park.

Happiness: they are sooooo much better than wooden or plastic ones, never break, can be re-shaped if you tread on them, can be left on the line (don't rust or stain clothes), work well on bags of frozen peas and muesli. Cheap as chips from Amazon or eBay

Bemusement: that people who are much more domesticated than me haven't come across them and discovered their brilliance.

Today's mini DIY with them was creating a mini clothes drying thing near the woodburner under the airing shelf I made previously.

I used both the Totpantau/Neuadd route and the climb to the left of Storey Arms, although that involved a little bit of more scrabbling than walking. Haven't done it since Covid though. I did the main route once and strangely, while it was easy going up, the strain on my knees coming down using the stepped path was worse than the other rougher routes.

Might do it again on a sunny weekday this winter when it is hopefully less crowded.

There is a chair lift up Annoach Mor, near Ben Nevis (and itself over 4000ft), but you cannot walk from the top station to the summit. This would be such an easy fix at Snowdon, or Yr Wyddfggrfhffyra, as it is properly called.

Alternatively, don't go upnthe easy way on a sunny weekend afternoon in the school holidays and expect to have the place.to yourself.

I don’t think it is an easy fix as the train stops right near summit on Yr Wyddfa, unless you are suggesting moving the train, to the summit next door, such as Y Lliwedd or Crib Y Ddysgl

I was thinking more like a fence. At the Nevis range it is no more than a 3ft high one of the snow carltching fences, from what I remember. Mainly it is self policing.

They won't don't at Snowdon because it would reduce ticket revenue.

What I mean is Ben Nevis is not comparable as the lift goes up the another mountain which gives you view of Ben Nevis weather permitting. The fence is irrelevant, you would still have a long hard trek to get to the summit of the Ben, and if that was your aim you would probably be better off just walking up from the valley floor.

When I was up there the train wasn’t running to the top but it didn’t make a difference. It’s also crowded pretty much all year now albeit maybe less crowded. The only way to avoid crowds is to do the sort of conditions that only very experienced mountain walkers should be out in (and even then you’ll probably see a family walking in Crocs with no kit). Pen y Fan tends to get crowded at sunrise and sunset as that’s become a trend in recent years too.
