Was interested to hear Lisa Nandy being interviewed on LBC this morning. Covering lots of topics, but the one that caught my attention was when Nick Ferrari asked her about ruling out Britain paying reparations for slavery, her answer on more than one occasion linked into the claim that the countries demanding reparations are amongst the worst victims of climate change.

I am not in a position to dispute or confirm the countries and the effect climate change has on them, but was interested to hearing this being mentioned in response to a question on reparations for slavery. As far as I can see, climate change and slavery have no causal connection.

I have no idea what the purpose of her linking the two topics was, and unfortunately the presenter never asked her about the link

She was just avoiding the answer by saying that climate change is a bigger more pressing issue than worrying about reparations. Which will never actually happen because no government could ever afford to pay even if there was a consensus to pay, which there isn’t.

There is no direct causal link. But the Carabean and pacific islands are often low lying and in hurricane/ typhoon zones.

The British government paid vast amounts of reparations when slavery was abolished. Some people built stately homes with the money.
Ex-slaves were mostly either destitute or forced into indentured labour.

Both issues are linked to the industrial revolution.

That is why I used the words causal links

Slavery never caused climate change or vice versa.
It was a strange answer to give, although as Beebo said, she was trying to avoid answering the question from Nick Ferrari. I just thought it odd to link the issues of slavery and climate change.

Settler of gobby hash.
Non-financial reparations?
Is Starmer hoping Commonwealth leaders might be bought with some Charlie XCX tickets, some Michael Kors designer specs, and the chance to drink from a gold goblet like a king of Middle Earth?

Not really as he already had discussed the middle east situation in a different segment
