Very convenient timing to be announced given the likely Streeting challenge that was expected today. Perhaps he will rethink.

And yes, she remains a hypocrite.

Yeah but she’s a leftie hypocrite which is far worse apparently.

As someone pointed out elsewhere, the choosing of the timing of the announcement was Reeves's, so it's probably not surprising that she's 'optimised' it for political gain.

Just reading (in a James o'Brien book, so largely sympathetic) about Ed Miliband's previous stint as Labour leader, and I can see why for both personal and political reasons he might prefer to stay doing what he's doing now. It really was deeply underwhelming stint, and reminds me why he was easy to ridicule (even if sometimes unfairly). I think he'd suffer the same fate now, and yes, his inability to do 'gravitas' (the 'tombstone' gambit summed it up) was a fatal flaw, IMHO.

0% chance Milliband will stand. I think Rayner would be a disaster. She's too vulnerable to the press and could never that battle. Streeting I know little about, which is his problem. It reminds me a little of the early stages of Thatcher's demise, in that the first attempt will probably fail but it will inform the likelihood of Burnham winning in a year or so from now.

I hope he's smart enough to have learnt his lesson, but I've given up being surprised how political egos trump nearly always trump sensible political analysis by otherwise apparently smart people.

There's too much "trump" in there. 😉
There can never be too little "trump". 😂

It’s a bit pathetic. The fact he’s that desperate suggests he wouldn’t be a good PM and just another in a long line of those doing it for their own ego / personal gain.

There must be other MPs who’d be suitable but lack the profile.

It also suggests that he is anxious to be out of Manchester, is there some REAL shoot coming there?
