Josh Simons standing down to allow Burnham to run apparently. If Burnham loses this will all get rather embarassing.
He had a majority of 5399 in the 2024 over Reform. Not massive.

If he can only get around 10% of the parliamentary party, how on earth does he think things will get better with the more left leaning wider membership?

What an absolute shite show.
Can Starmer block this again?
Can Burnham stand for MP without resigning as Mayor?
He could lose both.
Labour simply can’t help themselves. In fighting will leave them in the wilderness for another generation.
The NEC could block it as I believe they choose the candidate. Burnham must have got agreement from Starmer that he will let him stand (if he hasn't he is a bloody idiot!).
I believe he can stand as an MP and Mayor, but don't take that as 100% certain!
If MP goes ahead standing down and local party accept Burnham NEC is in a bit of a lose-lose situation they have created for themselves. NEC rejects Burnham and they'll be something of an outcry amongst backbench MPs (particularly given Starmer apparently effectively controls the NEC). But allow Burnham to stand and they question as to why they say no to the same request not very long ago. Outcry vs inconsistency.Josh Simons standing down to allow Burnham to run apparently. Obviously he would not do both, but there is a safety net should he lose a by-election.
I did notice his absence, but didn't want to mention it in case doing so somehow invoked his return.
I'm theorising that he wanked himself into a coma over the election results last week, and woke up in the last 24 hrs to be confronted with the ongoing Labour turbopsychodrama, then reflexively did the same thing again. Who knows when - or if - he'll recover?
