Oh dear, what a shame

Looking at the remaining Candidates, they definitely need a "none of the above" option.

It's definitely a sort of "pick the best turd" competition.

How stupid can you be not to realise that the reason you aren't in power is Cleverley, Patel and Jenrick amongst others. The only two candidates mostly taint free are Stride and Tugendhat. If I have to choose, I'll go Tugendhat.

It’s a horrific case, which deserves a thread of its own.
I don’t know the French penal system at all but those sentences seem very lenient to me.
Apparently Dominique has the maximum sentence possible which is 20 years. Given he is 72, it's unlikely that he will leave prison alive.

There is a comment from Marechal's lawyer that with a 12 year sentence, Marechal could be back out of prison in 3 years, so it appears possible that with good behaviour and rehabilitation the French system is geared toward home release rather than just keeping people behind bars.

It does say in the feed that the sentences are generally a couple of years lighter than the prosecution were expecting.

I certainly wouldn't describe any part of it as good news.

In that case, fck off to a thread that suits you. Bye! x

An interesting thing I heard is that the Jury was made up of 5 professional magistrates.
Maybe this is a good way to go for UK rape cases. Rather than 12 people who are unfamiliar with the law and don’t want to be there.

That may be a mistranslation. Les Magistrats are Judges. The case was heard in the cour criminelle where 5 judges hear crimes with a maximum punishment of 15 to 20 years. Only the top level court has Juries. Apparently everything below that is heard in the "police court"

I think they have far fewer Jury trials.
