And yet Starmer won the election by appealing to the centre, not the left. Cameron won by appealing to the centre, not the left. The UK tends to be centrist. A right wing agitator like Badenoch isn't going to get people like me to vote Conservative again. It will just continue to strengthen the Lib Dems.

She doesn't need people like you, she needs the reform vote. We ignore the far right threat at our peril.

Well the people / elderly / lunatics (delete as appropriate) have spoken, firmly choosing future unelectability for the Conservative Party. Like him or loathe him, it seems as though Starmer will have two governments back to back.

The second bad enoch to be a prominent Conservative. Whoda thunk?

You would be saying similar if Jenrick won

Which is not a bad thing if it breaks up the cosy duopoly that we meekly go along with as if it is the only way.

From the minority and shrinking clique that proudly gave us Liz Truss with many of the country still paying for that "gift". And from those condemning us to the impacts of their choice of PM anybody received any apology?

As Rory Steward pointed out, it would be more democratic were the decision to be entirely made by the Conservative MPs as at least they have a mandate from their electorate whereas Conservative Party members ... don't have any mandate.

I expect an apology around the same time as we get one from Tony Blair over the war in Iraq.

The MPs have a better idea of the leadership qualities of the candidates, but no one has a natural right to a mandate until the rules of the organisation (or country) they belong to gives them that mandate. As in the Labour party, the members at least pay for the pleasure of electing the liars, ideologs and clowns put before them. We just pay the costs afterwards.

As you say. And a lot of truth in the song

I have no idea of the answer, but, isn’t the issue “are you typical of most people?”.

Parliamentary Tories are now running scared. Having cleared the more moderate Tories from the race in order to clear the way for one moderate candidate, and getting it wrong, they ensured that Party members were given the choice between two twats.

Parliamentary Tories now know they are doomed to the forthcoming implosion. How do I know?

Well, this morning I had it confirmed when we had a glossy pamphlet delivered from our local MP.

Note, there is no mention of the Conservative Party throughout the entire leaflet, which is coloured Green rather than their usual blue, even the clothing colours are toned down to navy in favour of her usual bright blue.

Anyway, if you can be bothered, read it and you'll hopefully see.

I have no idea either. But centre ground parties do tend to win elections.

In other news Badenoch is surrounding herself with top talent more of the same. Priti Patel is back amongst others.

Well I never thought I would say this but maybe Cleverly is not a daft as he seems.

Yes - that was my first thought

steps back in an honourable way to give her a clear run at leading that party

which really means allowing her a clear run at cocking it up while all the time staying out of it and being there in the background knowing that people won;t have forgotten about him

and in a few years
Oh - she's not doing well - so we need to look for someone else
err - James - do you think maybe you could think about coming back for the sake of the party country???

That is something I find worrying. Whilst I strongly disagree with Ms Patel's politics, what is so worrying is the number of times Ms Patel has broken Ministerial Code (having had to resign), how she ran a private foreign policy (14? undisclosed meetings with Israeli Ministers and senior figures), breaches of security (eg use of private e-mail accounts), etc. That these repeated failings are just ignored is very concerning.

2 suspicions
a) there is no-one else willing to be on the front row as they don;t want to be part of this and want to wait until the next leader comes along (JC??)

b) Putting her in the place she is most likely to do something totally unforgivable (again) so they can get rid of her permanently

neither seem likely but what other reason could there be other than "outside influence"
