Talking of which, where's our chief military strategist and commander in all this?

The optimist in me sees this ending fairly soon with Russia getting the land East of the Dnieper river ( where most of the ethnic Russians live) in exchange for peace and letting the more Eurocentric Western two thirds of Ukraine to get on with building its relations with the EU plus softening the rhetoric on joining NATO.

I mean the Donbas region is rich in shale gas, they already took Crimea a huge chunk of coastline and with it the coastal oil and gas rights, a decent sized Black Sea port city and shipyards.

Letting Russia take land for reasons when they want is a bad precedence, what next Moldova as it has a separatist region to the east as well called Transnistria?

I can’t see this at all. Why couldn’t the Minsk agreement work? Because USA & U.K. didn’t want it to that’s why.

Sorry what?

Russia didn’t want it to work as they sponsored and armed separatists, they were looking for any pretext entry.

So Putin is there to remove military targets his words so they shell apartment blocks.

There's really little to be gained by appeasing Putin at this point, my guess is that the Ukraininans will demand that Putin leaves their territory and will assert their sovereignty 100% I don't think it's about the military situation - it would be extraordinary if the russians failed to beat the Ukrainians, but Putin has possibly lost the battle politically already. He's failed to convince his own people, united europe, strengthened NATO, and the russian economy will be devastated in pretty short order. How will he even pay for this escapade, and what's the exit strategy. It's a massive miscalculation on his part, you have to wonder how long he'll last if his mafia cronies are losing money.
Refraining from being deliberately antagonistic is not the same as appeasement.

For some truly thought provoking facts and (rhetoric) questions on the subject, the horse's mouth is hard to beat - Jack Matlock, whose career in Moscow spanned 30 years culminating as US Ambassador during the last 4 years of the USSR in 1991, has recently written his thoughts here, it takes more time but you can also watch the video below.

The renowned US scholar John Mearsheimer said the same. In 2014, he lay the blame (for the Ukraine mess) firmly on the West, namely USA.

As far back as 2007-08, Putin warned Bush Jr that if they insist on pushing eastwards, Ukraine will "cease to exist".

It's because of these warnings that France and Germany refused to endorse EU and Nato membership to Ukraine. Yet, under Obama and now, Biden, the US continued its policy of poking the bear.

The troop build up did not start in December 21. The build up commenced in Spring 2021. Putin was hoping his show of force would persuade Biden to get Ukraine to abide by the Minsk agreement. The French and the Germans were pushing Zelensky extensively, but the US felt Putin was bluffing.

The result of this policy are before us.

Precisely. France and Germany were pushing Zelensky to abide by Minsk, but Zelensky was emboldened by Anglo/American support and declined repeatedly.

Pretty much every observing body has said Russia abided by the Minsk agreement since 2014. It was Ukraine that didn't and refused to do so.

How exactly did the US and UK stop the agreement, involving Russia, Ukraine, Germany and France, working?

Sounds as if you agree with Russia’s envoy to the OSCE Alexander Lukashevich who recently said Ukraine’s "foreign sponsors" encourage Kiev to sabotage the Minsk accords by shipping weapons to the country.

He's bang on. Ukraine reneged on a central tenet of the agreement: the incorporation of the Donbas back into Ukraine with a degree of autonomy. They argued that Donbas was not going to get the special provisions previously agreed. The US wanted to revise the Minsk agreement in support of the Ukrainian position. The UK just followed the US, like they always do.

I see that she has refused requests to open up to all Ukrainian refugees for fear of, get this, Russian infiltration! Is she fųcking joking?
This bullying excuse of a human being has a bitter cold stone for a heart. She represents the modern Tory party of bastards who would eat their own children if it got them votes.
