I loved Gazza's Guinness Crisps. Or was that Burt's, I forget.

I saw that the other day, made me smile in the shop. They blame a dry summer on their website.

Funny, because Sainsbury's are blaming "poor weather" for their shortages...

So brexit is definitely a factor in food prices, the cause of some scarcity, and harm done to UK farmers and growers.
That was predicted from the get go

Alongside more extreme climate change related extreme weather events and unpredictable weather patterns.
Also predicted for decades.

But market control by supermarkets, multiple and commodity buyers is also a massive part of the problem.

For decades they have nailed farm gate prices down to the point where now it's often no longer viable to grow crops to sell through this wholly buyer-controller market.

It's no surprise that many farmers and growers are saying "Why bother? "
When market conditions, plus lack of skilled labour to plant maintain and harvest isn't there.

They were encouraged to specialise in one or two crops for 'economies of scale' to mechanise and use lots of chemical inputs.
In fact they were pretty much forced to 'get big, or get out' - Anything else was seen as cranky luddism.

The overall 'cost' of food is not reflected in the price of it - the costs have been externalised onto farmers, workers, and the environment for decades

Only now is this really being realised by many in the relatively affluent west.

We could be producing far more of our own food, in far more diverse and sustainable systems.

But whilst supermarkets monopolise the market, government's ignore the issues (and even ignore any proffered solutions)

And yes even consumers join in the 'race to the bottom, because everyone wants 'cheap' food even if they could afford better.

Things will be slow to change.
