So Heathrow is out of action completely today - that'll be utter chaos for the next few days.
Which of Pootin's agents set fire to the electricity substation then?

How do you know it wasn't Bernie Eisel forgetting to brake (again)?

Ooh, two graphs! (Sorry about the zeros on the Y axis)

I saw someone walking along a road the other day with a cigarette between his fingers, and it looked weird, simply because it's vanishingly rare to see these days, at least in the UK (less so in France). I hope that vapes will go the same way.

I recall back when non-smokers were rejoicing at the smoking ban that I claimed, don't be too happy, they're going to go after alcohol next.
Anyone noticed how the recommended level of alcohol consumption keeps dropping?

In France they smoke and drink more than us and they live longer.
We're just becoming a sanitised nation with elf n safety going nuts too.
TBF - the interpretation of the HSE rather than the spirit of the legislation.

The French make up just as many rules except they just ignore them.

Maybe, but they do sometimes pay the price.

True.
I wonder if this country could function without taxes on cigarettes, alcohol and fuel. Do-gooders would go nuts at their tax increases.

But if we didn't have all the car drivers paying tax, I guess the road building and maintenance costs could be reduced dramatically.

As for tobacco taxes:
  • total tobacco receipts for the complete calendar year (January 2024 to December 2024) were £290 million (3%) lower than the same period in the previous calendar year (January 2023 to December 2023)
  • total tobacco receipts for the period November 2024 to January 2025 are £465 million (20%) lower than the same period in the previous year (November 2023 to January 2024)
  • total tobacco receipts for the last complete financial year (April 2023 to March 2024) were £8,804 million, which is £1,199 million (12%) lower than the previous financial year (April 2022 to March 2023).
  • lower receipts in the 2023 to 2024 financial year were driven by a decrease in receipts for both cigarettes (down by 14%) and hand rolling tobacco (down by 6%)

Electric or hydrogen powered vehicles still need roads. 😉

As I said those not using tobacco, alcohol or fuel (petrol) are going to get upset. 😉

Not if those diminishing tax returns are replaced by other polluter-pays taxes.

Well, the tobacco tax is an interesting one, as the reduction in cancer treatment costs will be more than offset by people living longer, I guess. Musk is actively seeking to reduce life expectancy in the US amongst the poor and POC (considerable overlap) - it's one way to reduce state expenditure, I suppose.
